A/N: hey guys so this chapter is basically a summery of events that happened before their 3rd year. Whilst some things are revealed in this chapter about why they act the way they do and actions they have taken, it is not all things as some things will be presented later on in the main story within flashbacks ect. This chapter covers 3rd year at Kitagawa as shown in haikyuu with a bit more, up until summer after second year at Aoba johsai. Sorry if it's slow and poorly written.

This is my first story sorry if it sucks.

I'll try to add tw for things in each chapter, but read description for them all overall.

Tw: panic attack, temporary hospitalisation

——Last tournament against Shiratoirizawa middle school——

"Congratulations!" The man said to oikawa whilst handing something to the brunette boy. To others, this might not have been a big deal, but to Tooru Oikawa, it was. It was proof of how hard he had worked, proof of how good he was and proof that everything he had done up until that point had been worth it.

It was an award which said
'Best setter award
Mr. Toru Oikawa
The Miyagi prefectural Athletic meet volleyball competition-boys'

Oikawa received it with a large and warm smile stretched across his entire face.

"That's an honest smile for a change" the young man with dark and spiky hair next to him stated calmly.

"My smiles are always pure and innocent!" Oikawa snapped back, slightly offended by the comment his friend had made about him.

"Saying 'innocent and pure' out loud sounds impure"

Oikawa's smile began to grow back. "Why wouldn't I be happy? I've never gotten one of these before!"

They had won their first set which resulted in them placing second overall. Oikawa received the best setter award So was a day he could never forget.
He tightly hugged the award all the way home then placed it carefully in his room, next to his alien plush collection. If his door were open, it would be on full display so he could cherish it every morning and show it off to the guests in his house. He was finally satisfied with something he had accomplished, but he was nowhere near ready to take it easy. It only motivated him more, made him try even harder to be better then he already was. He could feel the adrenaline Coursing through him as he picked up the volleyball and made his way outside. He practised till he couldn't anymore, till the sun had been corrupted, and the night sky lied above him. He tried to push the feelings of failure, fear and regret away and think of his achievement as he attempted to sleep that night. Aiming to be hopeful for what the future could bring. After everything that had happened that year, he finally believed he was worthy.

back to start of year 3 middle school

Toru Oikawa was a laughing jackass the majority of the time. But there were times where he couldn't smile. Hurdles he couldn't overcome, no matter how hard he tried, he lacked raw talent.

As a child, he was ambitious and hard-working, but as he started to grow older, he became aware of reality, to the point where his confidence was being dragged down by the overwhelming realisations that even though he was good, his best would never be good enough. It wasn't until his 3rd year of middle school, when everything started to become too much. Tobio kageyama - a first year - moved to Kitagawa Daiichi Junior High. He was a child prodigy, his aptitude was overwhelmingly obvious. He was fit for all kinds of positions, but they knew he'd eventually be a setter, just like Oikawa. After hearing that, Oikawa began to practice even harder than before.
