My name is Kocho Shinobu.

Daughter of Kocho Jiro and Suzuki Keiko.

Sister to Kocho Kanae, for whom the rights of primogeniture lay within.

I was born on the twenty-fourth of February in the year nineteen hundred and fifty (1950).

My mother is the daughter of a humble merchant, whilst my father is the son of a Naval officer.

In accordance with family tradition and the outbreak of hostilities against the West, my father enlisted into the Imperial Navy and was dispatched to the Pacific theatre.

It's almost a miracle that Otōsan survived the maelstrom of the Pacific War—something that millions of other enlistees didn't receive the benefit of.

Unfortunately for those who initially advocated for war, the intransigent spirit of the Japanese people did not commensurate with the industrial, technological, and logistical might of America. As such, the Second World War resulted in a crushing defeat for the soldiers, sailors, and people of the Empire of Japan.

Father would return home to a subdued, desolate nation ravaged by wartime air raids, food shortages, and the enormous loss of life to this conflict.

Mother would no longer undergo the harrowing ordeal of being at the mercy of American B-29 bombers as they level entire cities into rubble.

Both Otōsan and Okāsan lost everything to the war: their families, their livelihoods, and their homes.

That was when they met each other.

With nowhere else to go, with no one else to turn to, they could only rely on each other. It was a romance story in the making.

Within due time, of course, their love blossomed, and was subsequently married.

The immediate post-war years and the transition to peace weren't exactly pleasant experiences for our parent's generation. However, with enough diligence, perseverance, and mental fortitude, my parents managed to settle down and proceed with a peaceful life that eluded the unmitigated turmoil and wanton destruction of the war years.

As the country recovered and an economic miracle concurrently commenced, my parents were among one of tens of millions of newlywed couples who sought the stability and prosperity they didn't have the opportunity to relish in during the turbulent years of the depression, military junta rule, and, ultimately, the Second World War. This sentiment was especially amplified whence their children were conceived into this world.
