You stared in disbelief as the demon tried striking Giyuu, until he knocked her out as well. You jumped out of the tree and landed on the ground. "She tried to protect him?" You asked. Giyuu nodded and gently picked the girl up. You looked at the boy, and lifted him up. "You really had to be that brutal?"
Giyuu put a blue robe on the girl and laid her down. "I wasn't brutal. I tried to make it painless." You raised a brow and shook your head, lying the boy down next to his sister. "Who's the girl?" You asked. Giyuu crossed his arms. "Nezuko, apparently." You nodded and looked down at the boy. "He didn't tell you his name?"
Giyuu shook his head. You giggled. "I've never seen you show so much emotion." He smacked you. You turned to the boy on the ground. "Send a letter to Urokodaki-san. That boy's got potential." And with that, you ran off.
Once you got back, it was night, and Giyuu's crow already delivered the letter. You looked over Urokodaki's shoulder. "It's not common for Gi-chan to recommend someone." Urokodaki nodded and folded the letter. "I'll write back. While I do that, you go find the boy." You nodded and ran off again.
You heard the boy's voice scream and ran in his direction, gripping your sword. You pulled the fox mask over your face and arrived in the area. There was a demon pinned to a tree, and the boy was holding a knife. "A knife won't kill it." The boy and Nezuko turned around.
"Then, what will?" He asked. You let go of your sword. "You tell me." The boy looked around and saw a rock a bit bigger than his fist. "I have to blunder his head..." He picked up the rock, but as he held it, he wasn't able to crush the demon's head. The sun came out and the demon faded away.
"The sun won't always be there to save you." You told the boy. You pointed to the house where there were at least ten dead bodies. "Your sister is hiding in there." Tanjiro ran in and saw her hiding in the shadows to avoid the light. "I'll watch her, you go make a basket of some sort." You offered.
While he did that, you buried all the dead bodies next to the house. He came back and saw you kneeling down, with your hands pressed together.
He looked at you. "Are you... Urokodaki-san?" This boy... "No, I'm simply his pupil. But I'll lead you to him."
You ran as the boy struggled to keep up. "He needs a lot of training." You muttered. You arrived at the house and knocked on the door, which Urokodaki opened. "Thank you, Y/N."
You nodded and walked inside. Before shutting the door, you turned to the boy and asked, "What's your name, by the way?" He straightened. "I'm Tanjiro Kamado!"
You removed your fox mask and smiled. "I'm Y/N." His face flushed red and you shut the door. Tanjiro brought his sister inside and said that you would take care of her. You gave her a mat to lie in and stayed there, not really doing much.
~Time Skip~
It's been a year since Tanjiro first came, and he's been improving, as far as you could see. Occasionally, you would train with him, and he would lose miserably. But most of the time, you were just training with other Hashira, practicing your forms and even learning new Breathing Techniques. One day, while you were watching over Nezuko, you heard something from outside.
You went outside and saw a crow coming, so you held out your arm. The crow landed on your arm, a letter in its talons. It was a letter from Shinobu, requesting for you to come to the Butterfly Mansion.
You ran into the forest and stopped next to Urokodaki. "Urokodaki-sensei, Shi-san wants me to go to the Butterfly Mansion. May I go?" He nodded and looked at Tanjiro. "Just don't run all the way over there. Take a carriage or something." You bowed and ran off. "Shi-san?" Tanjiro mumbled.
You took two carriages, and ran the rest of the way, and finally got to Butterfly Mansion. "Good morning!" You greeted to a girl with a side ponytail and and purple eyes. She looked at you and smiled, but she was silent. You nodded and Shinobu came to the front. "Ah, Y/N! Good morning! Thank you for coming today. Come on, we'll train in the back. Kanao, you come as well."
You and the other girl followed Shinobu into the Butterfly Mansion. "Kanao, you don't need to train with us if you don't want to. You've already trained today, and you haven't eaten yet." The other girl, who was Kanao, nodded and left.
Shinobu told you to sit on one side of a table, which had many cups of tea on it. She sat on the other side and explained what she wanted you to do. "You will try to splash me with this tea, but I will try to block you. When I try to splash you, you can also block me. Once the cup is blocked, you cannot touch it again. Alright?" You nodded.
The "match" lasted for about ten minutes, until you took a cup and paused. "Um.. I don't actually have to splash you, right?" She chuckled. "If you don't want to, you don't need to." You smiled and put the cup down. You noticed someone was at the door.
"Kanao?" You asked. Her eyes widened a bit and she looked down. "Kanao, why don't you come and go against Y/N here?" Kanao nodded and walked over, sitting across from you. This match lasted a lot longer, both of you with neutral expressions the entire time, while Shinobu was smiling.
Finally, both of you took a cup, but didn't splash each other. "Huh? Ah, you tied!" Shinobu noticed. You put down the cup, as did Kanao. "You're really good." You complimented. She looked at you and dug into her pocket. She took out a coin that had heads on one side and tails on the other, and flipped it.
It landed on heads and she turned to you. "Thank you. You are, too, Y/N." You grinned and looked at the coin. "What's that for?" She looked down at it. "It's to help me make decisions when no one is there to give me an order."
You looked down at the coin. "Why don't you make your own decisions?" Kanao looked at you and tilted her head. "Don't you think that you should be able to make your own decisions rather than an object?" Kanao was still silent. You held the handle of your sword. "Of course, I can't make that decision for you. If you like that the coin makes decisions for you, then I won't stop you. I just feel like you should think for yourself, you know?"
Kanao smiled. "Thank you, Y/N. I hope to see you again." You nodded and bowed. "Farewell." You both said. You walked off, waving to Shinobu and Kanao.

You got to the house and heard Tanjiro still descending from the mountain. He came out of the forest and made eye contact with you. "Ah, Y/N! Were you training with Mr. Tomioka?" You shook your head. "I was training with Shinobu." He tilted his head at the unfamiliar name. "Is that this 'Shi-san' you were talking about?"
You felt blood rush to your cheeks. "O-oh, you heard that. Yeah, it is." He smiled and went inside. "You should come, too." Tanjiro nodded and followed you inside. You went to the back room and saw that Nezuko was still asleep, as she was when you left.
"Tanjiro, does your sister usually sleep this much?" He walked up behind you and shook his head. You closed the door and looked at Tanjiro. "You would've loved training with Gi-chan. He's really strong." Tanjiro raised a brow.
"Gi-chan is the boy you met in the forest last year, blue eyes and black hair." His eyes widened in realization. "He doesn't seem like the type who would have a name like that." Tanjiro said. "He seems like the type that would force you to call him 'sensei.'"
You giggled. "Well, I've known him since I was 4, so maybe that's why he's accepting the nickname. It was given to him when I was seven. Even though I'm twelve now, I still call him that." Tanjiro's eyes widened, this time in surprise. "You've been here since you were four?!"
You nodded and leaned on the wall. "Our family was killed, so my brother carried me here. Him and Gi-chan went to the Final Selection." Your eyes became glossy, but you wiped them. "Of course, I don't recommend you calling Mr. Tomioka, as you know him, 'Gi-chan.' It may make him uncomfortable. Same with Shi-san."
Tanjiro nodded. "I didn't plan on doing that, anyways." You giggled and leaned on the wall. "By the way, you're probably going to have to cut a boulder." Tanjiro looked at you with wide eyes, but you said nothing more. "Good night, Tanjiro." You waved and went to the back room with a smile on your face.
Alright, so I did my math wrong and if you were 7 when Giyuu and Sabito went to the Final Selection, then Giyuu would've been 17 when he met Tanjiro, not 19 like he was supposed to be. Whoopsie.
