It's been about a day since the Final Selection and you've been feeling a bit more relaxed than before. You were out in the forest, climbing multiple different trees and stepping over many different rocks. The sounds of nature rather than demons caused a smile to form on your lips.
Meanwhile, Tanjiro was at the house carrying wood for Urokodaki. "Where's Y/N?" Tanjiro looked around, even sniffing for your scent. "She's in the forest." Urokodaki placed a log of wood in the pile and looked back at Tanjiro. "You seem like you want to ask me something."
Tanjiro looked over at Urokodaki and sighed. "W-well, during the Final Selection... Y/N did something." Urokodaki dusted his hands and opened the door. "She's been training with other people so she can u-" "That's not what I'm talking about." Urokodaki looked at Tanjiro with a curious expression, although it was unknown to Tanjiro. Fiddling with his fingers, Tanjiro explained what happened.
"A twelfth form?" Urokodaki lifted his hand to his chin as Tanjiro looked up at him. "Isn't there 10?" Tanjiro put down the wood he was holding and looked into the forest, then back at Urokodaki. Urokodaki looked at the sky. "I will send a crow to- um..."
Tanjiro looked in the direction Urokodaki was looking and saw at least 5 crows coming towards the house with letters in their talons. They each dropped it into Urokodaki's hands, and as they did, Tanjiro counted how many letters there were. "That's a lot... Who are they from?"
Before Urokodaki could answer, you came sprinting out of the forest with a smile on your face. "I think she knows already." Urokodaki held out the letters, letting you grab them and run inside. Tanjiro followed you and saw you sitting on the floor, opening one of the letters.
"Who are they from?" He looked over your shoulder as you read them. "They're from the people I've been training with. This one's from Gi-chan." Tanjiro sat down next to you. "Are they congratulating you on passing the Final Selection?"
You nodded excitedly as you opened the next letter. The letters mainly consisted of the same things.
"Congrats on passing!"
"I knew you could do it."
"I would've killed you if you died anyways."
"That training did you well!"
Stuff like that.
Then, you noticed a ninth letter. "Hm? Who's this from?" You looked at Tanjiro. "Maybe it's yours?"
Tanjiro shook his head. "It can't be. There's no one who would write to me." You examined the rolled up letter, trying to look for initials or an insignia of some sort.
"No, I'm sure that one is for you." Both you and Tanjiro looked at the door and saw Urokodaki standing in the doorway. You looked down at the letter and slowly opened it. "E-eh?!" Tanjiro's head snapped back at you. "What's wrong?"
You put your hand over your mouth. "It's... from Oyakata-sama." Urokodaki smiled behind his mask and left the house. You held the paper to your chest and bounced while sitting down. "Oh my god!" Tanjiro smiled as your eyes sparkled. Despite not knowing who "Oyakata-sama" is, Tanjiro was happy for you, seeing as you looked so excited while reading it.
Dear Y/N,
I have heard of you from many of the Hashiras and from what I've heard, you're very powerful, even before you became an official Demon Slayer. Now that I have heard that you passed the Final Selection, I took it upon myself to congratulate you. I hope to one day meet you in person.
Sincerely, Oyakata-samaYou giggled at the outro. "You can totally tell Oyakata-sama didn't write that last part." Tanjiro tilted his head. "Is he one of the people who trained you?" You shook your head and gently rolled up the letter. "He's way higher than that."
You put away all the letters in a neat pile and pulled out nine papers. "Are you going to write back?" You nodded as Tanjiro took a seat next to you. As you wrote back, Tanjiro noticed how you worded everything differently, rather than writing the same thing to everyone. "Y/N, would you consider the people you train with friends?"
You stopped writing for a moment and smiled at him. "Not really. I consider them more like family that I don't have." Tanjiro's shoulders dropped as you looked back at the paper and continued writing. Tanjiro stood up and walked out of the building.
"Urokodaki-sensei." Urokodaki turned from the forest and faced Tanjiro. "How long has Y/N been training here?" Urokodaki slowly approached Tanjiro until he was about three feet away. "Since she was six." Tanjiro's eyes widened a bit in pity.
"Don't feel bad." He turned and saw you standing in the doorway. "If you hold on to the past too tightly, you'll never be able to grab the future." You took Tanjiro's hand. "Come on." He yelped in surprise as you suddenly ran at full speed into the forest.
Once you got out of the forest, he saw a house a bit larger than his and Nezuko's. You gripped his hand tighter as you walked towards the house, and once Tanjiro saw what was there, he nearly fell to his knees. There were 5 graves, two larger than the rest (NOT CANON).
"That's..." "My family." Walking closer to the graves, you pressed your hands together and shut your eyes. Tanjiro walked up next to you and did the same. After a while, you opened your eyes and stood up. "I'm surprised I survived. When Onii-chan found me, I was in my mom's arms, bleeding from my head. I was the only one who was still warm, so he carried me to Urokodaki-sensei's house."
Tanjiro's eyes widened at how familiar your story sounded. "But, that's only what I heard from Onii-chan so I don't know all the details." He got closer to you and moved your hair out of the way, revealing the scar from when your family was attacked by a demon.
He saw how close he was to you and backed away. "S-sorry, I didn't-" He covered his red face and turned away. You giggled as you heard something coming towards you from the forest. "Hey, Urokodaki-sensei!" He waved and motioned for you and Tanjiro to come back to the house.
You and Tanjiro came back and saw the swordsman that came when Giyuu passed the Final Selection. "Ah, good morning, Haganezuka... san?" He was already rambling about Tanjiro's sword, about to move on to yours. "Goodness, gracious..."
He then handed you yours, and the blade slowly began turning blue. "Ah! Urokodaki-sensei!" He turned and flashed a non-visible smile. You stared at the sword in your hands as Haganezuka rambled on and on about the sword and how it was made, and whatnot.
You walked back into the forest as always and let the wind blow through your hair. Standing on a boulder, you stared into the forest. "Mist Breathing, Second Form: Eight Layered Mist." You slashed your sword as mist slashed at the air, making leaves from the trees drift slowly to the ground. "I'm getting better at that."
You had only trained with Muichiro twice, and you weren't as close to him as you were with Shinobu and Rengoku, and especially not as close as Giyuu. But you felt a connection either way. You remembered asking Urokodaki why you were able to do so much more than other people, even those who were already Demon Slayers, and he just knelt down in front of you and said, "You're different."
You looked at your hand. "Why am I different?"
Is it because you survived a demon attack?
Is it because you've been training from a very young age?
Is it because you were more powerful than those who were already demon slayers?
You didn't know.
You heard footsteps behind you and stepped down from the boulder. "Hey Tanjiro." He waved at you, but had a worried expression on his face. "Are you alright?" You nodded and began walking back to the house, Tanjiro following close behind.
Suddenly, you stopped in your tracks and held out your arm, letting the crow land on it. The crow whispered it in your ear since it was literally right next to your face. "Tanjiro," He looked at you. "Looks like we have our first mission."
