"Fou?"

"Yip?"

'Ugh. What happened?'

Welcome to Chaldea... starting up Spiritron Drive... beginning Master simulation...

'Oh yeah. I got a job at that Chaldea place. They ran some sort of test on me after I got here.'

I slowly open my eyes to see an adult female arctic fox and a strange, squirrel/dog-like creature staring down at me and nuzzling my arms.

"I'm up I'm up," I groan, opening my eye fully and looking around. I'm in a long, white hallway that's illuminated with fluorescent lights and lined with windows overlooking the mountainous region Chaldea is built into.

"It is neither morning nor night, so please get up, Senpai," a voice says to my right. I look up to see a pink-haired girl wearing glasses and a white coat over a uniform.

I get to my feet, scooping up my familiar, an arctic fox named Sionnach (Irish for fox), and placing her on my shoulders. Sionnach, with practiced ease, drapes herself over my shoulders like a scarf. Making sure that Sionnach is secure, I turn to the girl, "Um, who are you?"

The girl looks troubled, "That's a hard question to answer suddenly. Perhaps I'm not important enough for you to know my name?"

'The hell? What's she talking about?'

"No, I do have a name. I do have a proper name," the girl continues, "But I never really had a chance to use it. I really don't make good first impressions."

I sigh.

'Great, one of those people that puts themself down before anything even happens.'

"You're never going to make any good first impressions if you keep talking like that," I interrupt her, "Anyway, my name's Vox. What's yours?"

"Oh, um, my name is Mash," the girl answers.

"Fou! Kyu... Kyu!" the weird creature cries out.

"I completely forgot. I haven't introduced you, have I, Fou?" Mash says to the creature, before turning back to me, "This squirrel-like creature is Fou. He's a privileged life-form allowed to walk freely around Chaldea. Fou led me here, and that's how I ran into you, Senpai."

"Senpai? What the hell does that mean?" I ask.

"Ah, there you are, Mash," we are interrupted by a man wearing a green suit, who sets off every danger instinct in my body, "That won't do, you know, wandering about without permission. And someone's already with you? Ah, I see, you're the new recruit they just brought in."

"Recruit?" I snarl. In a blaze of light, a four-foot-long wooden staff with many intricately carved runes appears in my outstretched right hand. Solas Dawn, a parting gift from my teacher. (Solas Dawn means Dawn Light)

The man in green takes a step back, holding his hands up in surrender, "I meant no offense."

"I'll bet," I mutter, dismissing Solas Dawn in another flash of light.

"Anyway, I'm Lev Lainur, one of the technicians that works here at Chaldea," the man in green says, "And you are?"

"Vox. Vox Amethyst," I answer, resisting the urge to cast Kanaz and set Lev's suit on fire. There's just something about him that irks me for some reason. I can feel Sionnach's claws digging into my shoulder slightly, letting me know, even if we didn't have a semi-telepathic bond, that she is also wary of Lev.
