What Is My Purpose

The guy took me outside to some tables so we could talk. Although in the book store it was full of people he said it was his break, so he insisted we went out to talk.

I didn't know what to say to him, so I began with asking his name. That's an easy start, right?

"I'm sorry but what did you say your name was?" I asked, slightly tilting my head to the right, truly interested in his response.

"Oh right, sorry my name's Michael Wright." He said and offered me his hand, which I shook. "What is your name?"

My name.... I did not have one. I mean I did, but not a last name.

"My name's Elera, my middle name is Seraphina."

"Do you have a last name, Elera Seraphina?"

No but thanks for asking! I thought. I racked my brain trying to think of a last name I could use. My mind was blank, I was still in a bit of a haze. Wait! Hayes is a last name, isn't it?

"Hayes. My name's Elera Seraphina Hayes."

"That's a nice name. Do you know what language Elera's in? It isn't a common name." He said, not rudely but interested.

"I believe it's in Hebrew. I do not quite remember." I said with a light chuckle. He gave me a gentle smile, which I returned.

"What brings you to the book store? I don't believe I've seen you here before." He looked down at the table, as if trying to recall if we had met before.

"I was on the bus and this was the last stop, and I came here to ask where I was. I cannot decide what to do or where to sleep without knowing at least the answer to that question."

He looked at me with furrowed eyebrows, clearly confused by all I had shared with him. "You don't know where you are?" He asked aloud.

"No, but it would help if you told me." I said lightly, hoping for an answer.

"Look around you," he said with a light chuckle, his lips slowly turning to form a wide smile on his lips. "It's all around you, you are at Stanford University. In California."

I opened my mouth to speak, but nothing came out. If I was sent to California, why do I have a British accent? The idea seemed so silly in my mind I couldn't help but laugh.

"What're you laughing at?" He asked, afraid I was laughing at him.

I smiled. "No, it's just- I feel very out of place here, is all." He gave me a warm smile and nodded.

"I felt the same way when I first moved here." He said whilst looking away into the distance. He was clearly reliving the day before his eyes. "I fit in alright now, with my accent almost gone and all."

I looked at him. "Are you British?"

He smiled and turned to look at me again. "Yes, does it surprise you love?" He asked in a perfect British accent. I starred at him with my eyebrows raised in pure awe. He chuckled at my reaction. "That surprised you very much, didn't it?"

I glanced over at him and nodded quickly. "I was definitely not expecting that, especially since you just said you lost your accent."

He held up his finger to object. "As I recall, I said it was almost gone, I did not say I couldn't manage to say a sentence with it." I looked into his eyes and smiled. He had very beautiful eyes.

"Where do you plan on staying, now that you know where you are?"

I didn't know what to say. I still didn't know what this place was. I simply shrugged with a smile. He laughed and ran a hand through his hair.

"You could stay with me for tonight." He offered. "My roommates going to a party tonight, and I don't think he'll come back. We can arrange something."

I wasn't so sure about this, it wasn't something I would have typically agreed to. This situation was different however, and I didn't have another option. The sun was already setting and Michael was the only person I knew on this planet. I hesitantly nodded and he smiled.

"Oh, Elera, I forgot to ask, what is it that brought you here?" He asked after he stood up from his seat.

"What do you mean?" I asked. Could he tell the real reason for me being here? Did he know I was sent here from above?

"To Stanford. Do you plan on studying anything in particular?"

"No," I sighed in relief. "I haven't considered anything yet."

He smiled. "Perhaps you can join me in a few of my classes. You can see if any of them appeal to you." I smiled and nodded. "Does anything in particular interest you at all? It doesn't have to be anything specific, just a general idea or concept."

I smiled and looked up so we were facing each other. I don't know why but being with this human made my heart beat a little faster. Weird. "I want to help people, that is all."
