True Happiness

The next week I had already recorded some new songs for my album. They weren't hard to write, I had a lot of inspiration.

I was told they were great and going to be successful, but I didn't care. I mean, I did, but I wasn't as excited as they thought I would be. They expected me to jump up and down in pure happiness, but I didn't. I was still alone, and I couldn't shake the feeling of loneliness I felt.

Take it day by day, that's what I told myself. Except that with each passing day my heart ached more and more with pain. I spent every day sitting by my piano, writing songs and singing the words I had no one to say them to.

I felt so utterly alone, but I didn't want to make knew friends. I wanted to see Zach and Grace. Last I heard, they were already in a relationship. I missed Riley and Amber, my two closest friends. Apparently, what had happened, according to Riley, was that after I had left with Michael that last night, Amber and Adam really hit it off.

"It's so pathetic," she had said over the phone. "They always get gifts for each other with A's on it because they think it's so cute how both of their names start with the same letter. It's so disturbing, every one over here is just so mushy gushy with some one but me. It's like they've been brainwashed by aliens and I'm the only one who got out free. "

I chuckled."Have you tried meeting someone?"

"No," she said with a snort. "I've been to busy planning something."

"What?" I asked with furrowed brows.

"You'll see soon enough." She said in that mysterious voice she uses when she's being secretive. I knew she wouldn't budge, so I figured now would be a good time to change topics.

"So," I said unsure of whether I should ask my next question, but I did. "Do you know anything of Michael?"

She paused, I guess thinking of how to answer this. "He's great career wise, but he's lacking something. I don't know, he just doesn't seem so into it."

I felt guilty at hearing this. How could he not be into it, it was his dream! He had made it, and now he wasn't grateful? Was it my fault?

"Elera, have you thought about seeing him again?"

"Riley," I said, my voice becoming shakey. "You know I can't do that."

"Why not? He needs you and you need him. You haven't seen each other in almost six months now! Elera, trust me, what he's lacking is you."

Shortly after, we hung up. Riley was the only one I could really talk to, since the other two were always spending time with their boyfriends.

Don't get me wrong, I was happy for them. Especially for Grace. She had waited a long time for Zach. Yet, a part of me wished they still made more time to talk. We never saw each other in person, and they barely bothered to text me anymore.

Maybe it was a mistake, moving to New York. I was missing so much, and for what? I was contemplating this when I heard a knock on my door.

"Who is it?" I asked. No answer. I got up and walked over to the door. I looked through the peep hole and couldn't believe my eyes. I swung the door open and jumped onto Riley.

"Elera, get off!"

"Riley, I can't believe it's really you!" I said, hugging her tighter.

"Well, it is. So can you please get off of me already!"

I get off of her, but still couldn't believe she was really here. "What are you doing here?"

She was smiling as she entered my apartment. "Well, you know how I've always wanted to move to New York?" She asked. I nodded in response. "Well, I figured, why not now? You were living here, alone. I was bored back in California, with everyone being so lovey dovey. It just felt right, you know?"

I nodded. "But what about Stanford?" I questioned. "You didn't drop out, right?"

She laughed at my worried expression. "No, it's called a transfer. I'm attending NYU now."

"Oh," I said, still unsure of what she had done to get here. But she was here, and that was all that mattered. "What other surprises do you have up your sleeve?"

A mischievous smile formed on her lips, but she just shook her head. "You'll see."
