After school, I knew that I needed to make my way to the cave in the forest. I needed to clear my mind, so once Accalia met me outside after school, I let her know that was where I wished to go.
"Today was so long. I really did miss you," she told me truthfully, as the two of us got onto the bus and it began to drive off.
I stumbled into a seat and Accalia sat down next to me.
"I missed you too," I managed to say, surprised that I could even speak in amongst all of my racing thoughts.
Accalia reached out and grabbed my hand.
Her skin felt warm against my own, as could be expected.
After all, she did have wolf blood- we both did.
I turned to her and exhaled a little anxiously.
"Hey, are you alright?" she asked me, her voice soft and calming.
I sighed as I leant back in my seat.
"I don't know," I answered honestly.
I wasn't sure what else I could say.
Accalia looked as though she was anticipating for me to continue speaking, so I did just that.
"Why didn't you tell me that Mr. Z is your uncle?" I asked her.
Her expression became a little concerned.
"I was going to, Ophelia, I'm sorry," she said.
I gave a shake of my head in response to that.
"It's fine. It's just...he knows that I'm a wolf. I know that he's one. And-" I cut off, unsure of whether to confess what I had revealed to Kate in the forest today or not.
"And?" she pressed.
"And Kate knows. I couldn't hide it from her. She's an important friend to me," I admitted.
Fortunately, Accalia gave an understanding nod of her head, though her eyes appeared to flicker with something unrecognisable and I couldn't help but wonder, at least for a moment, whether it was a hint of jealousy that I detected.
"I get it, Ophelia," she told me, "You can't hide your secret from everyone. Please be careful, though."
I nodded in agreement with this. That was the smallest thing she could have asked of me after all the shit I had pulled today.
The unfortunate thing was that I hadn't even meant to start drama, it had simply ended up that way regardless.
Life was never going to be the same for me again and I knew that I was just going to have to deal with that.
I wanted to keep on Accalia's good side, though, because not only was she so important to me, but without her I knew that I would feel entirely lost.
How was I supposed to navigate the wolf world on my own, anyway?
As soon as I thought it, I tried to push the idea away.
Now was not the time for pessimism.
I simply had to focus on getting Accalia and I to the wolf cave.
I could ask any questions that I had, there.
Once the bus pulled up at our stop, we swiftly got out of it and began to make our way into the depths of the forest.
As the autumn continued to grow older, the ground of the forest became thick with red and golden leaves that crunched under our shoes as we walked on.
"Do you want to go to the cave?" Accalia asked me, seemingly reading my mind or actually reading my mind. I honestly wasn't so sure.
I gave a quick nod of my head in answer to her question and her eyes flickered with agreement.
The two of us continued to walk on through the forest, avoiding falling flat onto our faces as we stumbled past some tree stumps and branches.
We were werewolves, we weren't about to get defeated by nature.
As soon as I thought it, I realised how ironic it was, though.
I knew that the sickness was still present.
If we were lucky, it wouldn't take any of our pack.
We walked on until eventually we reached the cave and the two of us speedily made our way inside.
I was immediately greeted by the comforting lighting and could only just make out the rustling of the trees in the wind on the other side of the stone entrance.
"Oh, look who it is," someone said. I could hear the smirk in her voice before I even turned to see that Uma was stood nearby, sipping on a Coca Cola. "I didn't realise that you had joined the tribe, wolf girl," she commented.
I met her gaze and gave a slightly incredulous shake of my head.
"Ophelia..." Accalia started to say.
I turned to her with wonder deep in my gaze.
"She's one of us and you didn't tell me?" I asked her.
"I know, I know. There's a lot that I didn't get around to mentioning..." she trailed off.
I could have continued to interrogate her, but now simply didn't feel like the time to do so.
"I suppose that I should have been smart enough to figure it out, though. After all, you always had this peculiar look about you," she said.
Accalia shot her a look.
"Uma," she said. There was slight warning in her voice. It was rare from Accalia.
"I'm just messing around, Accalia. It's good to see you, Ophelia," she said, with a kind smile, as she wandered over to me and gently ruffled through my hair. "Want a cola? I have lots of them," she said generously, as she walked over to the fridge to open it.
I gave a shake of my head.
She closed the fridge door again and shrugged.
I was a little thirsty, but I didn't feel as though I could stomach anything currently.
"Alright, then. Just know that you can trust me. They wouldn't have let me in here, if they didn't," Uma told me and I knew that she was right.
I did need to trust them.
After all, they were essentially my new family. I knew that I needed to trust in them as much as possible.
We were all in this together, and it wasn't as if I could tell my father about me any time soon.
