"I simply can't help but wonder what all of it means," he said.
I gave him an expression that I imagined was rather dumbfounded. I didn't know what he meant by that.
"I mean you and Accalia becoming so close; this virus infiltrating our tribe..." he trailed off.
I could tell from the lines in his forehead that he was certainly worried about the things that had been happening lately.
I was worried, too.
In truth, I believed that we all were.
That wasn't to mention that I was new to this whole world. I was still trying to find my place in it. Furthermore, the closer that I got to Accalia, the more I questioned what was going on between the two of us.
"What's going on, losers? Do you have a spare slice of cake for me?" Uma asked as she walked into the kitchen. She swiftly stopped in her tracks when she realised that Luka was there. "Luka...sorry," she said, with a sheepish smile.
Luka didn't appear to be offended by what she had said, though. In fact, his eyes seemed to brighten in his good humour.
"We have a lot of cake, if you would like some, Uma. Though, I suppose that you'll have to take it up with Fenn," he replied, as the corner of his mouth twitched upwards a little.
Uma nodded in agreement, but she didn't leave the room.
"I actually wanted to talk to you, Ophelia, if that's alright with you," she said.
I inclined my head.
Luka's eyes flashed between the two of us and he soon said a quick 'goodbye' and headed out of the kitchen.
"What did Z want to talk to you about yesterday?" she inquired.
"Don't call him that," I said, "He's your teacher- he's Accalia's uncle. It's weird," I said.
Uma sighed. Her eyes flickered with something I hardly believed was actually there.
"You're jealous," I said, it only half-sounded like a question.
Her brow furrowed.
I had a feeling that I wasn't going to get much more of a response out of her.
"Uma," I said.
Sooner than she could reply, my phone buzzed in my pocket.
It was a text from Kate.
"Who's that?" Uma asked me, as her curious eyes locked on my phone.
I explained that it was Kate, but I couldn't say much else. My mind was entirely focused on the text displayed on the screen in front of me.
Kate: Ophelia...my address is below, I need you to come to my house A.S.A.P. It's an emergency.
I swallowed and immediately went to find Accalia.
Her ears pricked up, as she felt my presence.
"Is anyone going to give me an explanation?" Uma called after me.
I ignored her question for now. We had more important matters to deal with.
"You need to leave?" she asked me, "Kate in trouble?" she added.
I had almost forgotten that she could actually read my mind.
Most wolves could, actually.
It drove me insane because I couldn't read anyone else's mind, but anyway, that wasn't what was important here.
"Do you know how to get to Kate's?" I asked Accalia.
She nodded her head in response and the two of us soon made our way out of the house and back into her father's car.
Accalia wasted no time in starting up the engine and driving at lightning speed.
I held onto the door, as I felt my stomach bubble away with nervousness.
I was still hungry, which didn't exactly help my situation.
Eventually, we reached Kate's house.
The door was wide open, which signalled to us that someone had broken in.
"I'm going wolf mode," I said.
Accalia turned to me with some concern in her eyes, but before she could say anything to stop me, I was on all fours on the ground again with paws instead of hands and feet.
I made my way upstairs to find some guys- some wolf guys trying to hurt her.
Kate was sat on her bed with her arms wrapped around her and a mirror in her hand, which I supposed she had used for self-defence purposes, clearly very frightened.
A low, yet angry, growl was heard behind me and I turned to find that Accalia had joined me- now in wolf form, too.
The wolves eyes widened, as they appeared to recognise that she was an alpha.
At first, I hadn't really realised what the difference was between an alpha and the average wolf, but Accalia appeared larger, and stronger, too.
Leave her alone.
A voice spoke in my mind.
I could hear Accalia's warning. I could read her mind!
Now was not the time to get excited about that, though. We had a friend to rescue from these wolf idiots.
The wolves stumbled away from Kate and then moved closer to me.
Don't you dare touch her.
Why shouldn't we? One of the male wolves asked, She broke wolf law- she told a human about us.
She's our friend. Accalia responded, in reference to Kate's knowledge about the whole werewolf situation.
That was my fault. I couldn't help but feel as though I was the one to blame for these wolves antagonising my friend in the first place. I knew that Kate didn't deserve this. I should be the one getting the blame.
I agree, the wolf thought back to me- the larger one of the two.
No, you're not to blame for this, Ophelia. You're new, thus exempt from the wolf law.
You can't say that.
I just did. besides, I'm the alpha. Do you really want to argue with me?
The wolf shrank back at this question.
I didn't think so.
I knew that Accalia was only in my mind, but I could almost hear the anger in her voice.
Leave this place, now, Accalia thought and the wolves immediately rushed down the stairs of the house.
We followed them outside.
Dealing with an alpha sure is a lot of effort, one of them growled.
Then I suggest you do the easy thing and run, Accalia thought back.
The wolves stepped forward a little and I moved closer to Accalia, who came to stand beside me, supportively.
You're just not worth our time. Besides, the sickness will get you sooner or later, the larger wolf thought, before he and his comrade rushed off into the trees again, darkened by the night sky.
