Soon enough, the bell rang, signalling that it was about time for Kate and I to make our way to our first class.
Maths.
I grimaced.
"I'll pass you the answers during class," Kate whispered to me.
"You'll do no such thing, Kate Azule," Mr. Z said, as he walked past her.
Apparently, Kate hadn't whispered quietly enough.
Damn teachers with their bat ears. That was assuming bats actually had good hearing and that wasn't some kind of myth.
Kate shot me a sympathetic expression, as her cheeks coloured with blood.
Awkward.
"Okay, so I didn't do the homework," I admitted, as Mr. Z beckoned me over to his desk. "I was...preoccupied."
"It was your first day, so I'll let it slide this time. Only this time, Miss Amarilla. I trust that you will have your homework completed next time, otherwise I will have to determine the consequences."
I swallowed.
"Okay," I said. I was going to have to get over my fear of mathematics, at one point or another. This whole thing was beginning to get ridiculous.
Besides, if I was doing my maths homework, then maybe my father would ease up on being annoyed at me. At least, I assumed that he was annoyed at me. I was never quite sure how he was feeling.
That maths lesson, I decided to pay particular attention to what Mr. Z had to say and teach us. I didn't need to get myself into any more trouble than I already had. Between him and my father, I wasn't exactly doing great of late, but I knew that I would be able to turn that around with time and a little more effort. Even if maths wasn't the most enjoyable thing in the world for me, I was optimistic that I would be able to turn my grades around, too.
Kate had some part in that, of course.
After our first class had finished, the two of us had practiced some key algebra equations in the bathroom, while I watched her reapply her mascara.
"You know, I don't see how having longer lashes is going to get Uziel to notice you anymore than he does already," I said.
Kate turned to me with a slightly sheepish smile, in response to that statement.
"You've noticed that then, huh?" she asked me.
"Well, yeah, it's sort of difficult not to. Besides, you and most girls in this school seem to like him."
"Which makes me wonder why you don't," she replied simply, "He's so gorgeous."
"Oh yeah, like, a total angel! A true god," I said, with my best Valley-girl accent.
Another girl then entered the bathroom and glanced between the two of us with an expression of interest.
"What are you two talking about?" she asked, "Or rather who?" she added.
"Only Uziel. Oh my god, he's like, such a dreamboat," I said.
Kate couldn't help but smile, though she seemed slightly annoyed at me.
The corner of the girl's mouth twitched upwards a little. She was visibly amused and not put off by my terrible fake accent.
"Anyone wise enough to know what guys can be like knows that Uziel is a good guy...if a little blonde at times, not that he can blame that on his hair colour," she said.
"Are you Uziel's girlfriend?" Kate blurted before she could stop herself from doing so.
The other girl turned to her and scoffed.
"Oh, no. You have the wrong person. Uziel and I are just friends," as she said that, her expression became a little more serious, "We have been since we were kids. Anyway, I need to get to my next class. Mr. Z may just kill me if I miss the extra study session."
I winced at that, as if someone had just punched me in the arm.
"Oh crap, yeah. I'm meant to be attending that," I said.
The girl turned to me and her eyes brightened slightly.
"Well, you better hurry, new girl. Mr. Z hates when people are late, as I'm sure you're already probably aware of. Anyway, I'll see you soon," she said, as she stepped towards the bathroom door, "I'm Uma, by the way," she added, before she walked through the door of the bathroom and back out into the hall.
I then turned to Kate and shot her an apologetic expression.
"Don't worry- you need to attend this class, it's important. I'll see you around, yeah?" she asked me.
"You know it! I'll try and get you an apple pie from the cafeteria later," I said.
Kate grinned at that suggestion and gave a nod of her head in agreement. She then turned and walked out of the bathroom. I followed her out and bumped right into someone.
"Jeez, Kate, what-" I quickly paused as I locked eyes with a girl with golden eyes. Eyes that reminded me of the wolf in my dream the previous evening. Weird...but surely coincidental.
I smiled.
The other girl did not. Her expression was incredibly serious. She stared at me for a few moments, which caused me to feel as though I was rooted to the spot.
Kate had already begun to make her way towards her next class, leaving me behind.
The girl gave a shake of her head, as though she couldn't quite believe something and then spoke. Her voice was as clear as a crystal.
"I'll be honest, that was completely my fault," she said, as she took a step back. "I needed to go and get my books from my locker and I didn't quite notice you there."
I managed to keep my smile upon my face, despite my nerves because wow, I couldn't quite pinpoint what it was, but there was something about this girl that made her absolutely beautiful.
This time around, she smiled, as though she knew what I was thinking.
"Be careful, alright? You're the new girl, right?" she asked me.
I simply nodded, all of a sudden speechless. God, I see one pretty girl and apparently forget how to talk.
