The air was getting thinner and thinner. The male fisted his shirt into a ball on his chest, feeling like the walls were closing in. It was happening again.
'Monster!'
'Freak!'
'Psycho!'
The voices surrounded him.
The air was getting thinner and thinner.
"Tendou-san?"
Tendou's head snapped up, locking eyes with such a familiar face. How long had it been since he's seen this face? Since he's heard this voice?
Tendou winced, the pain not going away. The ridicules only becoming a whisper in the background as he tried to pretend like everything was fine. That everything was normal and that he was normal.
"Shrimpy." He forced out a breathy chuckle."What're you doing here?" He had struggled but managed to stand up straight, suddenly towering over the slightly taller but still short male.
Hinata's look of worry didn't disappear. He only stepped closer, putting a hand onto the male's arm. "Tendou-san, are you okay? You looked like you couldn't breathe..." His forehead formed a line of wrinkles as his brows furrowed in a concerned manner. If Tendou wasn't feeling like his world was caving in, he might've called him cute.
"What're you talking about? I'm fine..!" Tendou felt himself start to feel faint. Shit, he really wasn't fine. "Trust me, shrimpy, I'm oka—" He wasn't okay. As soon as he tried to push away from Hinata, the world began to spin. Suddenly, he was on the floor. The world had gone black for a second before returning.
"Tendou-san!" Hinata was on the floor next to him. "Tendou-san you just fainted! Come on, where do you live? I'm taking you home."
Tendou seemed to have forgotten exactly where he was. He looked around and could see the customers that stared at him with concern. He knew it was concern but their faces only morphed into those who only laughed and grinned at him. They were making fun of him.
The world was going black again. He couldn't stop it. He could only remember Hinata's concerned face before he passed out.
—
When the former "Guess-Monster" finally regained consciousness, he found himself lying on a soft comforter. One he was not familiar with.
His throat and chest hurt but he felt considerably better than before. Though, where was he? Tendou slowly sat up, knowing too well that he'd be dizzy if he were to love any quicker. Looking around, he didn't recognize anything in the room that could've been his.
He noticed a small tapestry on the right of him, hanging on the wall and suddenly he knew exactly where he was. The tapestry was black with large, bold Japanese letters that read: "FLY."
He was in Hinata Shoyo's bedroom. Of course he was. He'd expect nothing less from the male. He was always known to push his way into business that wasn't his.
Almost as if it was planned, Hinata made his entrance. "Oh, you're finally awake." Was all that was said as he came in and dropped a basket of what Tendou only assumed to be clean laundry. "Water. Drink." He pointed at the wall.
When Tendou turned to where the boy pointed, he saw that he was actually pointing to the bedside drawer and the glass of water that sat upon it. That's when he realized just how dry his throat was and just how thirsty he was. He scooted to the edge of the bed and reached for the tall glass, gulping down the refreshing beverage.
The water was cold and felt like cool ice as it washed down his throat. It was like this glass of water was the solution to all his problems and all he had to do was drink it. And so he did. He drank it all without stopping. Even when a bit wiped down his chin as if he were to be drooling, he didn't stop. Not until the glass was empty.
"Good." Hinata hummed, having moved closer to the joy. He used his thumb to wipe away the spilled water from Tendou's chin. The red-headed male could only feel the heat rising to his cheeks as he felt Hinata pull away.
"Um...how long have I been out?" Tendou managed to say, wanting to change the subject before it could even land on his blushing cheeks.
"Three hours." Hinata said, a serious look on his face. "Your employees said that you have been overworking yourself." He was definitely going to start lecturing the older. Tendou knew he couldn't stop him, though. He unwillingly let Hinata continue. "Tendou-san, you really need to take better care of yourself. I don't know what happened back there and I will not ask you to explain if you don't want to, but if I hear about you fainting again...I'm taking you to the hospital."
"I don't need a hospital." Tendou gritted the words. Hospitals. Just the mere idea of them made him shudder and want to hide away. "It was just a panic attack."
"Just a panic attack?!" Hinata was incredulous. "Tendou-san, panic attacks aren't to be taken as a passing event!" Hinata was clearly angry. He had every right to be. He knew how bad panic attacks could get. Not personally, never personally. But he knew Yamaguchi.
He's seen and dealt first hand with people who have the worst panic attacks. He's met too many people to not know.
"Well- my panic attacks are just that. A passing event. I don't even get them often, okay?" Tendou was tired. Tired of the yelling and of the lecturing. He's heard plenty of it before from others. It's always the same.
Except this time, it wasn't.
"Listen, Tendou-san. I don't know what it is that makes you feel like that. I don't know and you're probably never going to tell me. But I'm not going to let you hurt yourself. I saw you earlier today, remember?! You were in so much pain but continued to pretend until you /passed out./ Tendou-san, I'm sorry but I'm just not going to let you leave until you're feeling better." Hinata placed a firm hand on his hip, staring the male down with those eyes that told him he was going to win each and every game he played.
Tendou couldn't argue. He couldn't say 'no.' He just lied back into the comforter and watched as Hinata walked out of the room.
When Hinata returned, he had a tray in his hands. It was the type of tray for breakfast in bed. And he was right because Hinata sat the tray so that it was over Tendou's legs. "Eat." Was the order before he left the room again.
Tendou sat up and looked at the tray. It was soup. Tendou couldn't help but smile. He picked up the spoon and began eating.
——
It's been a week since Tendou's been "held captive." In a span of a week. Tendou has gained two pounds and has been feeling better than ever. In just a week, Tendou felt...good.
Hinata wasn't always home. Honestly, Tendou could've left at any time. Hinata couldn't actually make him stay, no matter how much he wanted to. Still, Tendou stayed. Even when Hinata went to practice or shopping. Even when he was all alone, he never truly felt alone. It was a good feeling. A feeling he wasn't used to. Not since....his ex.
Tendou shook his head clear from the memories that threatened to re-open his wounds. Being with Hinata made him feel free but it also trapped him. Trapped his mind. He didn't want to think about the past. The real reason for his bad habits.
It wasn't elementary. It wasn't middle school. He didn't care about the words of people he didn't care about. But he had tunnel vision.
'Focus on something else.'
'Don't think about it.'
'Stop thinking about him.'
And so he stopped.
Hinata clearly was curious about his panic attack from a week ago. He had been carefully avoiding bringing up the subject, but Tendou knew he wanted to talk about it. But Tendou didn't want to talk about it. Not yet. He wasn't ready. Hinata knew that. So, he smiled and ignored the questions that filled his mind.
Tendou was sitting in the couch, flipping channels as he waited for Hinata to finish dinner. Surprisingly, Hinata was really good at taking care of people.
"Well, I am an older brother." Was what he said when Tendou voiced his opinion.
Tendou smiled at the small memory when Hinata called for him. "Tendou-san, dinner's ready. Come get it." Hinata waved him over, setting out plates onto his counter. "Help me move it to the table."
The table was a floor table. One that crouched down to the ground so that you had to sit on the floor rather than a chair.
Tendou moved over to the kitchen and began helping Hinata move the plates to the table. They worked in a comfortable silence, already used to the routine they completely made up.
It's been one week.
——
One week quickly turned into one month. Tendou brought clothes over from his place now. He's actually gone back to work a few times, too. He's better. He's doing just fine. No panic attacks. He's eating well, too. Still, Hinata made no move to tell him to leave. He even helped Tendou pack a bag of clothes to take to his place.
Their routine was complete. Tendou and Hinata leave to work around the same time every morning. Tendou gets off first, so he'll usually do the housework. When Hinata comes home, Tendou is prepping dinner. While he preps, Hinata goes to shower. After his shower, he will cook dinner and Tendou will set the table. After dinner, they watch tv and then go to bed. In the same bed.
At first, Hinata insisted on sleeping on the couch. When Tendou was finally deemed "healthier," Hinata was finally convinced into sharing the bed. More than often, they would wake up in each other's arms. The first ten minutes of the day were always awkward.
Tendou spent this month in peace. He found himself looking forward to waking up just a bit earlier to see Hinata in his arms. He would never admit how his heart swells when he sees Hinata's morning smile.
——
It's been one month since Tendou has stayed with Hinata. Their routine was perfect and Hinata was way too used to being by his side now.
Tendou has yet to spill the beans on his baggage. Hinata is losing patience but refuses to admit his defeat. He doesn't want to push Tendou.
Hinata knows that Tendou should probably go home. He knows that Tendou is fine without him now. Still, he doesn't want to say anything. He can't help but look forward to come home to Tendou in the kitchen listening to the same French song every night that apparently is "the greatest song he's ever heard."
——
It wasn't until the second month of Tendou's stay that he broke down. In the middle of the night, Hinata was woken up by the sound of Tendou sobbing.
It took an hour to finally calm Tendou down. He had been crying for thirty minutes and shaking for the next. It was brutal and Hinata hated seeing him like that.
"Shh..." Hinata held him in his arms. Tendou's head on Hinata's chest, the sound of his heartbeat calmed him down. Tendou followed Hinata's breathing, letting his body shut down.
In the morning, Hinata woke up to them being in the same position from the night before. Hinata didn't move until Tendou woke up.
Tendou only moved to sit up, his hand balled up into a fist with Hinata's shirt clenched in it. "Don't leave." He mumbled, not looking at him.
Hinata placed a hand on top of Tendou's fist, letting the male relax his hand into his. "I'm not leaving." Hinata forced Tendou to make eye contact. "I'm not going anywhere."
Tendou wanted to cry again. He could feel his throat closing up on him when he let out a shaky breath. "I was...I was dating Ushijima, you know. Back in high school." Tendou started. "We were...great together." Tendou had a sad smile on his face as he reminisced.
"I, um, when I went to France, I wanted to break up. I...I didn't think long distance would work. But Ushijima...he convinced me. So I went to France, still having a boyfriend. Not even six months. I wasn't even gone for sit months and that...that bastard..." Tendou squeezed Hinata's hand. "He cheated on me. He said he was drunk. It was a mistake. That it meant nothing. He said he loved me."
Tendou swallowed back the tears and wanted to bad to be released. "And I believed him." Tendou let out a laugh that had no humor in it at all. "I loved him. I loved him so much that I believed him. I gave him another chance." Tendou shook his head, loving when Hinata squeezed his hand in a way to comfort him. "I came back to Japan last year, actually. I had been in France for two years and I missed Ushijima so much. We texted everyday and called weekly. But I wanted to hug him. To feel him."
Tendou hated himself for being such an idiot. "I didn't tell anyone I was coming back. I had gotten transferred to a culinary school here so that I could be closer to Ushijima. I wanted to surprise him. I had the key to his apartment and decided to go in and wait for him to return from practice." Tendou felt his voice crack. He ignored it, continuing, "He came home with Semi Eita attached to his lips." Tendou felt the warmth of tears sliding down his face.
Shit. He felt so pathetic. "They were making out as soon as they entered. I...I couldn't say anything. I just...stood there like a fucking statue until they noticed me." He scoffed, "And Ushijima had the nerve to try and apologize. He didn't stop texting and calling for months. I blocked him but that didn't matter. He called me with different phones. He even staked out my place to see me."
Hinata was boiling with anger. He couldn't believe Ushijima would do such a thing. "Tendou-san..."
"It's fine. He stopped...eventually." Tendou sighed, "The day...I...um...passed out. I had heard that he was dating Eita now." Tendou hated himself for still being affected by Ushijima. "I blocked it out. I tried ignoring it but turns out I'm not so good at deflecting. I didn't even freak about Eita and Ushijima. I ended up remembering how it felt to be bullied when I was a kid. And somehow...it mixed. I felt like...Ushijima was only with me out of pity. In reality, I will never not be a freak and he was only humoring me when he decided to 'love' me."
"Stop." Hinata had enough. "Please, just stop." Hinata scooted closer to the male, a hand going to caress Tendou's cheek. It was wet with tears but it didn't bother him. "I'm so sorry that Ushijima-san cheated on you. There's nothing I can say to you that will change that you were hurt. But you are not a freak. You're not someone to be pitied." Hinata was not good at comforting others like this. He was never one with words.
So, he could only pull Tendou into a hug. But that hug meant everything to the male. Tendou let himself cry, once again, in Hinata's arms.
Hinata skipped practice and Tendou took the day off. Tendou made the first move. He couldn't help it. When they finally moved away from the hug and Tendou could breathe again, he placed a kiss onto Hinata's lips.
It was quick and Hinata almost thought he imagined it. "Tendou-san.." Hinata grabbed his face and kissed him back. The kiss was slow and hesitant. Like they both had no idea what they were doing.
Hinata pulled away and they just stared at each other for a bit. Contemplating. "Why...?" Hinata started.
"Because you're here." Tendou admitted. "Because these past two months have made me feel normal again. I feel good with you, Hinata."
"I'm a rebound, aren't I?" Hinata knew his heart hurt from his own words. He could only ignore the feeling of his chest squeezing.
"Maybe...maybe not. I don't know. But I want to know. If...if you're willing to let me." Tendou stared into Hinata's eyes. He felt bad. He knew he was probably taking advantage of Hinata's kindness and the clear feelings they both developed over the past two months. He knew someone would end up hurt.
But that didn't stop him from wanting Hinata to kiss him. From wanting to kiss Hinata.
"Okay." Hinata mumbled. "Fine. Let's try this." Hinata convinced himself that this was worth it. Whatever the outcome, it would be worth it.
Right?—————
