"Heather, you ready you'll miss the flight?" Mom shouted from the staircase.
I shoved one last outfit in my suitcase and then zipped it shut. It was overflowing and I had to sit on it to shut it.
"Urghh," I grunted trying to yank the zipper shut. I was so nervous and in such a hurry. If my flight took off, I would never be in time for my first day of College in Australia. From California to Melbourne was an eighteen-hour journey, and if by god's grace I didn't miss the flight, then I would reach just in time for my first day.
After all the drama I was so ready to leave this place forever and hopefully never have to return.
I was going to Melbourne Law school which was my childhood dream. When I received the letter of acceptance, I had screamed in joy and immediately called up my best friend Ashley who wasn't as lucky. It was our dream to get into the same university, but unfortunately her application was rejected and as the reality sunk in, all my happiness of being accepted drained out of me.
However, she called me squealing two days later that she had been accepted by the Sydney law school which was an eight-hour drive from my college. It had been her second option and I was delighted for her. Now she was waiting downstairs for me in her car and kept yelling at me through the window.
"I'm coming!" I shouted and tugged my suitcase and duffel bag with me. Noah rushed to help me and loaded my suitcases into Ashley's boot.
"Honey don't forget to call me when you reach," mom said getting all teary eyed as she hugged me tight. "I won't," I assured her, "And mom light up for goodness's sake, I'm going only for six months I'll be back soon,"
She nodded and wiped her tears then smiled at me.
I went to Noah and hugged him tight. "I'll miss you idiot," I told him.
"I'll miss you too," he said.
Ashley honked the car horn startling us, "If you're done with your sappy good bye's then can we leave?" she yelled though the window.
"Manner less child," mom muttered under her breath. Mom hated Ash. She told me to stay away from her on principle. The feeling was mutual.
"Yes yes, I'm coming," with one final wave to them both, I sat inside the car and hugged Ash hello.
Ashley was shorter than me. She was five feet, had long black layered hair and big black eyes.
"I swear to god Heather, if you would've taken even a minute longer, I would have left you and gone."
"Family goodbyes are also essential Ash," I told her.
She rolled her eyes. "I don't get the need for all this drama; I never even bother with it. My mom has no idea I'm even gone, I only left her a note. By the time she reads the note I'll be in Sydney," she whistled.
We were taking the flight to Australia together which would land in Melbourne. From there she would take her connecting flight to Sydney.
"LETS GOOOO!" Ash shouted as she drove at lightning speed. "I've never missed a flight Baby!" she shouted.
I thought of asking her if she was high, which she probably was, but then came to the conclusion that I didn't want to know.
As promised, we reached the airport on time and boarded the flight early.
However, I got a shock when I realized our seats were not next to each other. Ashley had a front-row seat while I was crammed between an extremely fat man who completely hogged the armrest and a child who was traveling in an aircraft for the first time.
He was about eight or nine and had shaggy blond hair that fell across his face. He had large round and curious eyes and his front two teeth stuck out like a rabbit from his chubby face.
"What is your name?" he squeaked excitedly as he buckled in the seat belt.
"I'm Heath-"
"Cool!" he interrupted, "I'm Jason. I am eight years old. I'm from Nevada. I go to St. Mary school. I like to play baseball. I support the Chicago Cubs...." He kept going on and on and on.
The air hostess started to give the safety briefing.
"Ladies and gentlemen, on behalf of the crew I ask that you please direct your attention to the monitors above as we review the emergency procedures. There are six emergency exits on this aircraft."
"WHY ARE THERE EMERGENCY EXITS???" Jason looked shocked. "Will we have to jump off from the plane?" he asked.
"Jason this isn't sky diving calm down," I told him.
"Take a minute to locate the exit closest to you. Note that the nearest exit may be behind you. Count the number of rows to this exit."
Jason leaned across his seat and frantically began to count the rows, "1,2,3.4......Wait was it 8 or 9?" he asked me.
"You don't actually need to do all of this, just relax and sit down please," I begged him
"How can I relax?" he asked looking flustered, "This is a matter of life and death!"
"Should the cabin experience sudden pressure loss, stay calm and listen for instructions from the cabin crew. Oxygen masks will drop down from above your seat. Place the mask over your mouth and nose, like this. Pull the strap to tighten it. If you are traveling with children, make sure that your own mask is on first before helping your children."
"Oh God! Can this flight be any more miserable?" Jason wailed, "Now we have to worry about atmorsic pressure or something,"
"In the unlikely event of an emergency landing and evacuation, leave your carry-on items behind."
"THIS IS JUST A SCHEME TO STEAL OUR BELONGINGS!" he roared, "THEY WANT TO SCARE US AND MAKE US LEAVE OUR STUFF. THIS IS A CONSPIRACY" he shouted which earned him a couple of ugly stares from the row in front.
"Life rafts are located below your seats and emergency lighting will lead you to your closest exit and slide. We ask that you make sure that all carry-on luggage is stowed away safely during the flight. While we wait for take-off, please take a moment to review the safety data card in the seat pocket in front of you.
"WHAT! We get to ride rafts and water slides? This is going to be the best day of my life!"
I sighed, it was going to be a long flight.
I was so sleepy. I hadn't slept well in days working on my university application. I rested my head on the window for a second and woke up eighteen hours later in Melbourne.
