The onslaught on the rogues was going to commence on the peak of dawn; which left me very little time to prepare for my impending doom. Lucas’s declaration had shocked just about everyone and angered the rest. My father and sister were one of those people. It was both comforting and distressing at the same time to know that my fear was shared by my family and that was the reason why my father was currently meeting the council members and trying to persuade them to rethink their decision. While everyone else prepared for the attack.

My sister in the meanwhile was trying to comfort me. But little did she know that any peace and comfort present in my life flew out of the window. When Lucas appeared in my life. I couldn’t guess his intentions behind this whole scheme, which was troubling me more than the fact that I was about to face rogues head-on. How was I supposed to watch that jerks back, when I couldn’t even protect my very own self, all the while knowing? He had some other plans in store for me.

I was busy with my remuneration while Layla was fuming in anger as she paced around worrying over the whole situation,’’ What is he thinking!? Placing you in danger like this. when everyone knows you are not combat trained. Thank God, you have been learning offensive magic from me. Otherwise, we would be sending you to your funeral. Wait, you didn’t tell him about your magic, did you?’’

I replied,‘’ No. Of course not.’’

She asked inquisitively,’’ Not even to boast?’’

‘’Come on, I am not that vain.’’

‘’Then why the hell is he doing this? aren't mates supposed to be protective of each other? and what is taking dad so long?

I asked,‘’ You think dad can convince them to leave me out of it.’’

Layla commented,‘’ It’s unlikely considering you agreed in front of everyone but I doubt that would stop dad from berating Lucas nonetheless. I sincerely hope. I don’t end up with a self-absorbed mate like Lucas. By the way, where is Aaron?’’

‘’He is probably with all the big shots, discussing what to do with me and would you stop pacing. I am starting to feel dizzy just seeing you go back and forth.’’

"Okay. Look dads back." Layla practically ran towards dad while I slowly walked behind her.

I was going to ask dad about the discussion but his worried face spoke volumes.’’I am sorry Lena they won't let you back out. At this point, it would hurt the morale of other participants if you were allowed to back out just because it is dangerous.’’

"But…. " Before Layla could speak anything else I reassured both of them. "Don't worry I will be fine. I have been learning a lot of new spells from Layla and I am sure it won't be that bad besides, I have already faced them before when I knew nothing. I can do it again. And I sincerely doubt Lucas would let me die on his watch." Dad cut me off before I could say anything else.

"Elena beware of him. He is not someone who is ruled by his emotions. He will not hesitate to hurt you if it served his interests. be careful around him."

Dad's words left me bereft. So now even he knew what kind of a terrible person was written in my destiny as my mate.

After preparing for hours the time for departure finally arrived. My group was supposed to leave first and then the mages would teleport the rest of the people in divisions. Teleporting to me always felt as if I was floating mid-air and so my landing was usually very ungraceful. This particular time was no exception.

After landing in the abandoned valley I noticed the eerily quiet atmosphere and the large number of trees surrounding us. We walked to the rogue's hideout. There were at least ten people in our group including Lucas and me. Mages and vampires. Lucas was leading the group stealthily deep into the heart of the abandoned valley all the while mages were doing their best to cloak our presence. As the name suggested the valley which was once densely populated was abandoned by its residents. when a devastating earthquake hit the area. Lots of people lost their lives, the remaining residents moved elsewhere.

There was a series of broken, dilapidated houses and buildings in the vicinity. Roads were littered with rubble and debris. According to our info rogues occupied the broken tavern that had a vast basement beneath it; that undoubtedly served as their base. When we reached the tavern Lucas gestured to the mages to break any barrier on the place, but to everyone's surprise, there was none. But the vampires had sensed the presence of rouges inside, if not for the cloaking the rogues would have sensed us too. Lucas gestured the mages to teleport all of us inside so we would have the element of surprise on our side. I was starting to pity the mages because of Lucas’s endless demands, even I knew they didn’t have an endless supply of magic. They would be depleted of magic if they had to do another teleportation. But the mages obeyed Lucas without hesitation and I readied myself to attack a moment’s notice.
Then I felt the familiar sensation of floating again.

The next thing, I knew we were inside the tavern. The air inside was thick with malice and bloodthirsty creatures with glowing red eyes had sensed our presence.

The barrier had broken…..
