School hasn't started yet and I'm not sure I want it to. I've been here at NYU for a few days just unpacking my stuff and meeting some classmates. I put the picture in the middle of my desk next to my pencil cup and my Iron Man Funko Pop. I smiled at the picture as I sat down in my desk chair. I was startled by the sound of my door opening.
"Hey, I'm your roommate, Sarah," She said, walking through the door.
She plopped her things on the empty bed and stuck her hand out to shake my hand.
"You must be Bela," She said.
"Yeah," I said, shaking her hand. "Nice to meet you,"
"So, Bela, where are you from?" Sarah asked me.
"I'm from Canada," I said.
"Really?" She asked. "Cool!"
"How about you?" I asked.
"I'm a local, I live a few hours away," She told me. "Do you like it here?"
"Yeah," I said. "I miss my friends, though,"
She looked at the picture on my desk.
"Are those your friends?" She asked, pointing at the picture.
I hesitated, but then told her anyway.
"This is Mat here in the middle," I smiled. "And this is Shreya to the right,"
"You guys are so cute," She said.
"Thanks," I blushed. "I miss them a lot,"
"Did they go away too?" She asked.
"Yeah, Mat went to Seattle and Shreya went to North Carolina,"
"Wow, you guys are really far from each other," Sarah said.
"Yup," I spun around in my chair like Mat usually did.
We didn't say anything for a few seconds, the room was silent.
"Do you need help unpacking?" I asked to break the silence.
"I'm good," She said. "Thanks, though,"
There was a knock at the door. I went to go answer it. I opened the door to see a delivery man holding a small package.
"Bela Matthews?" He asked.
"That's me," I said.
He handed me the package.
"Thanks," I said.
I shut the door and went back to my chair to open the package.
I smiled as I saw a note with Mat's handwriting on top of a black hoodie.
Bela,
Hey, sorry I didn't give this to you earlier I completely forgot. I hope you have fun in NY. Love you
Mat
I put on the hoodie and smiled at the scent of his laundry detergent.
"That from your boyfriend?" Sarah asked, looking over.
"No... well, kinda," I said. "We were together and then we decided to be friends,"
"At least you can still be friends," Sarah laughed.
"What happened?" I asked.
"It's a long story," She said, folding her clothes in her drawer. "Basically, my ex Nick and I got together our Freshman year of High School and broke up before college. He thought that I didn't love him anymore which was beside the case and he got all mad and stuff,"
