Belle And Enid Babysit Heather (906, canon)
"Have you ever thought about a middle name?" Enid asked from her bed, my daughter bouncing on the mattress. I looked up thoughtfully from my seat on the floor.
"I don't know. There's just so many names." I shrugged. "I thought Lori would be nice, after Carl's mom. But since Hershel was a boy, I figured Beth would be nice, too. And then there's Sophia, Lizzie, Mika...so I decided maybe she can choose her own." Heather Grimes was a good enough name by itself, I thought.
"Maybe you should call her 'Enid'." I laughed at my friends proposal, going back to the books piled in my lap.
"Maybe if you had a kid, you should call it Belle." I countered. "It works for a boy or a girl."
"Shut up." Enid chuckled, her eyes focused on the bouncing child. It was like ever since Heather could stand on her own two feet she never stopped moving, always running or leaping or fighting. She was a good kid, she just took after me too much. It wasn't often, but sometimes I would pick her up from the nursery and Angie would regretfully inform me about "Freddie Neil running home in tears" or "Marcie Emmett's lunch being stolen".
Heather always defended herself, insisting she was in the right because she only picked on the bullies. I had to act like I wasn't proud, scolding her and forcing her to apologise to those she hurt.
"What're you reading?" Heather flopped onto the bed, her curious gaze on the papers across the floor.
I smiled at her as she turned her head, attempting to read them upside down. "Jesus gave me some plans for new equipment, I just need to figure out where to put them."
"A windmill?" She exclaimed excitedly, her fingers crumpling a sheet with a picture on. "Will it be like the one in Alexandria?"
I bit my lip hesitantly, nodding. "Yep. Maybe I'll even ask Jesus to put in a slide." I grinned, hiding my initial thoughts. Every time Alexandria was mentioned it sent a spark through my veins, something that felt like regret and yearning. It had been a long few years, and while there had been the odd visit from a couple of community members, news about the place was vastly unknown.
Enid took one look at my distant stare and changed the subject, her tone light. "I think you need a bath, don't you?" Her question was directed at Heather, who slumped on the mattress.
"But it's story time." She huffed, her arms dangling by her side in protest.
I blinked myself back, my lips pursing. "Story time will still be here when you get back, I promise I won't start without you."
The child shrugged her shoulders dejectedly, finally agreeing to let Enid direct her to the washroom. I got to my feet, settling on the bed and lying back. I shut my eyes with content, my muscles relaxing instantly. It was nice to get some peace and quiet.
"Mommy, Auntie Enid broke the faucet!"
