hi, its the author. im going to switch to past tense cause thats what im used to and its actually hard to try and write it all in present tense. ill fix that in the earlier chapters if and when i edit this story.

and once again, thanks for reading my story! i think sometimes i seem kinda formal with this stuff but its mostly because im just not really sure what to say, cause im utterly clueless in the art talking to people

ill get out of your hair now. bye.

wilder pov. fourteen years old.

I continued the same as I had for the last year, pickpocketing as much as I could before heading to the library. I think I passed, judging by the instructor's reaction, but I was still extremely nervous.

The days passed excruciatingly slowly. Each day I worried, occasionally my mind would be distracted when me and the green eyed boy were together, which had become more often.

He was nervous about the results too, he admitted it.

Along with hanging out with the boy more, I found myself thinking about him more too.

When the day finally came that they would post the results, I was not staying still for more than a second.

The green eyed boy tried to calm me down, but it didn't really work seeing as he was just as nervous.

We were among a large crowd in front of the academy where they would be posting the results. There was talking, yelling occasionally, and it seemed like everyone was nervous.

Suddenly everyone started talking louder, faster. They had brought the board out. I grabbed his hand and weaved through the crowd. Something id figured out how to do a long time ago, it really helps with stealing.

When we ducked out of the crowd in the front row, we searched.

I squinted, trying to read the words. Had my eyesight gotten worse?

The green eyed boy gasped and pointed, "there I am!"

I followed his eyes and gasped as well, I was right around where he was pointing. "So am i!"

Then suddenly, at the same time, we turned to each other.

"Wait, whats your name?" he asked.

I laughed, "I'm Wilder."

He smiled, "I like that, it fits you. I'm Ellio."

"Your name fits you too." I smiled and looked back to the board. My name was right above his. Both of our names were in the top ten. Me, eighth and him, ninth. I grinned and dragged him over to a table. Behind the table sat a young woman, she glared at us and said, "what do you want, rats?"

"Umm . . . I do believe you would refer to me as a slum rat and him as a commoner crow but whatever. We're Wilder and Ellio, we'd like to know our rooms please." I said.

The woman glared and said, "last names?"

"Vinee" Ellio answered, they both looked at me expectantly and I just shrugged.

"Don't have one."

The woman glared at us once more and then looked down the list.

"Your roommates, room 218"

I smiled said," you hear that? Were roommates."

"Here." the woman said begrudgingly, "your introductory pamphlet."

Ellio took the two booklets she held out and we walked off, talking about what the school year might be like.

I flipped through the booklet, squinting again, ". . . we move in tomorrow and we get a week to settle in before classes start." Ellio hummed and flipped through his.

"I think I need glasses."

Ellio laughed, "you sure squint enough." I elbowed him with a scowl. "youd look good in them though." at this I blushed.

"Thanks..." I said, fingering my necklace while turning back to the pamphlet.

I perked up abruptly. "Theres tuition here?!"

Ellio looked at me and said, "yeah, you didn't know that?"

I shook my head solemnly and flopped down onto a nearby bench. "I would get a job, but no ones gonna hire a rat."

"You could go in your uniform and wash up, they might never even notice."

". . . yeah, but I've got an accent, right?"

Ellio sighed and leaned back on the bench. "Yeah, a little. Your words are... sharper? Like your consonants are more pronounced... I guess."

I sighed and leaned back too. "I guess well burn that bridge when we get to it."

Ellio looked at me curiously, "what does that mean?"

I looked back at him, surprised. I hadn't even noticed that id slipped up. They don't use that phrase here.

I hadn't done that in a long time.

"Umm . . . well . . ." I trailed off, trying to think of some to say. "Its something my dad used to say." that is true, my dad from earth had said that. But its a common phrase there.

"Oh, what does it mean?"

I paused to think, "well, I think the original saying was 'well cross that bridge when we get to it.' but somehow it changed and turned into a burn. Like, well figure out the problem when we get to it."

"Huh, I like it." We sat on the bench for a while before we decided to go check out our new room. We got lost several times and ended up going in circles. Eventually we bumped into another student and she gave us directions.

eventually, we found the door, 218.

The room inside was awesome. At least, to a rat it is.

I looked over to see Ellio, he was standing with a similar expression. Apparently it's amazing for crows too.

It was a large room, a couch near the far wall. There was an entire wall of windows, from which you could see the courtyard. The walls were a boring beige, the floors a stained wood.

"This is where we are staying for the next four years." Ellio said, awe obvious in his voice.
