Zumishi threw the heroes a glance. She glared at them, almost disdainfully and ran into the maze.
The heroes snapped out of their trance and hurried towards the entrance, but she had disappeared around a corner. Not knowing which way to go, they stared at the three paths leading off to darkness for a few seconds before coming to an agreement that they should go left.
The stone walls were yellow and rough, towering high up into darkness. It didn't seem like they would be able to jump over the walls and beat the maze from there. The walls were too high. Midoriya decided to try anyways. He powered up and sprang back and forth between the two walls, disappearing into the darkness of the roof. Moments later he came back down, confirming that the walls did connect to the roof and there was no way over it.
"What if we blow it up?" Bakugou stretched out his arms.
Kirishima blinked. "Idiot! If you blow it up we'll most likely be disqualified or crushed by the rubble!"
Todoroki shook his head and walked on, the others trailing a few metres behind him. Their quiet footsteps echoed slightly as they walked. footprints leaving marks in the dusty floor. It wasn't long before they reached another intersection.
This time they had two choices, to go straight or to go right. Both ways seemed to lead off to an endless tunnel that they couldn't see the end of. Bakugou tapped the walls of each path, deciding that the one going straight would lead to a dead end at some point. Of course there would be many more paths turning off that, but going right seemed to have more options. According to Bakugou anyway. So they headed right.
"Ah- this place is kinda spooky..." Midoriya shivered slightly. "I'm not scared of the things coming, it's just that the silence is kinda making me nervous, you know?"
Todoroki nodded. "It just feels like everything has been put on mute, and we're wearing noise cancelling headphones. The calm before a storm." They quickly switched their attention to Kirishima and Bakugou, who both seemed quite sad.
"If I don't make it out of here-"
Kirishima grabbed Bakugou's hand, burying his face in his boyfriend's shoulder, a few tears leaking out. "D-don't say that..." Bakugou tensed, unsure of what to do, squeezing Kirishima's hand tighter.
"No one is dying!" Midoriya seemed a little angry. "We're all going to live after this! Do you understand?"
Kirishima looked up with a small smile and wiped his eyes. "I'm being overdramatic aren't I... I guess I'm just emotional when it comes to you guys. You're literally my family..."
They smiled together, hearts warming up a little. Midoriya though, started to have a bad feeling that something was going to go wrong.
Soon they reached a part of the maze where there were three paths leading off, when suddenly, a large wolf sprung down from the darkness above and sat in the way. "If you prove yourself worthy here, you may pass. If you don't, you shall go the same way as the people before you." It gestured to a pile of human bones in the corner. Wincing, Todoroki stepped forwards.
"Give us your puzzle."
It nodded, inhaling before standing up to deliver it's lines. "It can't be seen, can't be felt, can't be heard, and can't be smelt. It lies behind stars and under hills, And empty holes it fills. It comes first and follows after, Ends life, and kills laughter. What is it?" It sat back again, waiting for the answer.
"Huh?" Kirishima turned to his friends, looking for an explanation.
A few seconds ticked by and no one had any idea. "What can't been seen or felt? Or heard or smelt? Huh? Comes first and follows after? What?"
