Darkness... it's all around us, whether it's visible or not. It engulfs the night like a blanket, covering almost everything. A large part of Jack's life was surrounded by darkness, it suffocated him to say the least. But on the other hand, in a weird way, it provided him solace. Funny, huh? The same thing that was killing him was the same aspect keeping him sane.
Yet, darkness isn't just what we see at night. There's much more to it; shadows that watch your every move, unspeakable spirits whose intentions are anything but good, and those that stay lurking in the deep depths of the night, feeding off fear.

FLASHBACK
"No, no, no!" He screamed, looking down at his mother who lay on the floor, lifeless. Hot tears streamed down his face, landing on his mother's cheek as he cradled her head on his lap.
"Please, don't leave me."
His voice fell on deaf ears, she couldn't hear him but he kept yelling, thinking that someone... anyone would listen to his pleas.
"I'm so sorry, mom. This is all my fault, I- I wish it was me instead. Just, please wake up." He shook her body, violently.
An ominous voice laughed, mocking him. "She's gone, Jack. Oh, you poor thing!"
Jack recognized that familiar voice right away but he didn't know where it was coming from. "I'll kill you." He said, his voice filled with venom.
"Ah, leaning to the dark side. A little late for that, don't you think? How unfortunate that your mother is dead, truly a pity." The voice said, laughing obnoxiously once again.
Jack screamed in anger, shooting his powers out at every direction.
But the voice was gone and unbeknownst to the young prince, his mother wasn't the only one who was going to leave him that night.

"Mom!" The king woke up panting, trying to get a grasp of his surroundings. Thankfully, he was in the company of his own bedroom. The worst part of this entire ordeal was the nightmares. They'd never leave him, it was an endless cycle that repeated itself every night. Unwillingly, he relieved that tragedy more than once.
It ached him. Why did it have to be him who lost everything?
He shook those thoughts away, dwelling about the past would only get him to think about his family even more which was not something he wanted because that only brought him pain.
His eyes darted to the clock that hung on the wall, seeing how it was already late into the morning, he unwillingly got up.
Frequently, when he'd have these nightmares he would wake up extremely early, but surprisingly, that was not the case.
Even if the nightmare may have jerked him awake, today was the first time in a long time that he'd been able to sleep in. He daresay that it had something to do with the young princess across the hallway that made him want to have hope.
Jack scoffed, he was beginning to sound a lot like Hiccup. What was going on with him? Hope was for losers and he had more pressing matters to deal with. The nightmares did occur every night but for some reason, his gut was telling him that there was an underlying message along the lines.
