The High King

Chapter 3

Varian's POV
It's been a month since I became a rogue.
A month of endless torment and with the only thought on my mind being survival.

Looking up at the evening sky,I let out a sigh.

Tonight was the full moon and also my 18th birthday and I really hoped I shifted into my wolf.

But if I were to even shift tonight, I'd surely die because I didn't have a pack or a mate to help me through the shift.

Hearing waves hit against rocks,I realised I was close to a river. I quickly made my way through thorns and itchy leaves,to the source of water nearby.

Alas,water. Precious water.
How I've missed you.

I ran towards the river immediately taking huge gulps of water with my palms to quench my thirst then strip my clothes  for a bath.

Thank God no living being was with me otherwise I'm sure I'd have killed them with my stench. I smelled like shit,literally!

Coming out of the water feeling cleaned.I put on my old clothes and search for a tree whose branch I could rest on.

How I wish I had my duffle bag with me . I could surely use a change of clothes and a warm blanket to spend the night but I lost my bag three weeks ago to a group of rogues who saw me as their meal.

Had I not known how to climb  and jump from tree to tree, I would have been a pile of bones by now.

Stretching my sore muscles and stiffling a yawn,I make myself comfortable on a nearby tree and slowly,my mind drifts to the rejection and the banishment.

I tried forgetting that night but every night I closed my eyes,her beautiful face invaded my thoughts followed by her rejection and her disgust.

"I can't be with such a weak creature.  I can't be with this filth" ,it kept playing on repeat in my head.

Sighing ,I begin to drift to sleep but no sooner had I closed my eyes than I heard a child scream and a growl, followed by multiple laughter .

I silently climbed down the tree and hid behind some bushes peeking at the situation before me but it was what I saw before me that made my blood boil in fury.

Before me were three wolves and six vampires who had their backs facing me. In front of them was a boy my age standing protectively in front of a little girl who couldn't have been older than 10.

"You were always the brave one Silas,weren't you?",a vampire said smirking.

"You think you can take us on? Look around boy, you're clearly outnumbered ",a wolf said .

"We're just going to kill you,then we will have some fun with that beautiful thing behind you , she will produce strong pups",another vampire said ,licking his lips.

"No one is going near my sister,you will have to go through me first",the boy, Silas said letting out a growl.

"If that's what you want " ,a vampire said just before he sped towards him knocking him out cold.

"Silas",his sister screamed ,rushing towards him.

"Well hello there",the vampire said making his way towards the little girl who was scared for her life.

Not being able to hide any longer,I stepped outside from behind the bushes .

Noticing the new presence amongst them,they turned their heads towards me.

"Get away from the girl",I said .

The nine men began laughing as if I had just told a funny joke.

"Don't worry rogue,we will be coming for you soon, afterall Josh over here is into boys",one of the vampires said pointing to a werewolf with yellow teeth.

Fighting the urge to throw up,I glare at the men before me and repeat myself.
"Get.away.from.the-ahhh",I scream as my leg twists to an odd angle.

"Won't you look at that,the mutt is shifting ",a vampire said snickering.

His friends begun laughing as they saw me in my helpless state.

I was finally shifting. But why did it have to be now.

I let out another ear splitting scream as my bones broke and rearranged themselves.

What was happening to me?

I felt intense power and knowledge flow through my body as my body continued shifting.

About thirty minutes later,my body came back to normal and it seemed like I didn't shift at all.

The nine men looked at me in horror and took a few steps back. I looked at them confused and saw the now awake Silas looking at me with fear while he shielded his sister from me.

What were they afraid of?

"What.the.hell.are.you?",a vampire said through gritted teeth. It seemed like he was using a lot of energy to just talk.

"I don't know,a wolf?",I said, but it came out as a question.

"I've never seen something like this before,all my 756 years of life I have never seen a creature like you before. You showed signs of shifting but you didn't shift into any creature. ",he said with wide eyes.

"Unless...",he began as something like realisation dawned on him.

"Impossible, it can't...",he couldn't get to finish his sentence as I had his heart in my palm seconds later.

Snapping out from their daze,the rest pounced upon me with speed but it seemed like time had slowed down as I could see them slowly making their way towards me.

I sped towards the vampires,and all that could be seen by the normal eyes were heads rolling and hearts falling to the ground.

The wolves upon seeing this,shifted into their wolves and from the neatness and power that rolled off them in waves,I knew they belonged to a pack and they were also of high ranks.

As if it was my second nature, I immediately shifted into a huge black wolf,bigger than all the three wolves .

My ears bent backwards as my lips curled to reveal a snarl.  Just before they could pounce, I sped towards them,slashing their faces with my claws which strangely had black mist coming off them.

Glancing through the knowledge flowing through my head, I bit them behind their necks releasing a venom into their bloodstream which was going to kill their wolves and then kill them.

I watched as the venom began it's work and the three men began writhing in pain. About 5 minutes later, the men were a foaming mess on the forest floor.

Shifting back into my human form,I made my way towards the two siblings who had been watching everything.

"Hello there,I'm Varian",I said extending my hand for a handshake.

And I'm done with this chapter.
So he finally shifted.
