An AU where Luke and Zander were dating for a while before Zander and Hailey's family had to move away.

Third-person POV:

Luke was laying on his bed, blankly staring at the ceiling as he sighed. Ever since Zander had moved away, his normal warm and cheery personality had vanished, and he had turned into a gloomy and depressed person. Even though that was two years ago, he still couldn't get over the fact that his boyfriend, and childhood bestfriend, had left him, possibly forever. He turned onto his side, catching sight of a photo on his bedside table of him and Zander standing in front of their special tree. Summer 2020. The best few months of his life. Luke's sun-yellow eyes stayed glued to the photo as all those amazing and heart-breaking memories came flooding back to him...

Flashback

Luke had rejected Stacy after she confessed her feelings for him in the English classroom and was now chasing after a crying Zander with his fellow band members behind him. He chased the smaller boy out of the school and onto the path that him, Zander and Hailey would walk to get to their homes.

"Zander! Stop running!" he called out.

The smaller boy continued running for a few more seconds until finally slowing down and stopping. Zander might have been a faster runner, but Luke had more stamina, so it wasn't long before he caught up with him and stopped as well. Both boys first took a minute to catch their breaths since they were panting from exhaustion, before Luke spoke.

"Hehehe...You're fast!" he chuckled, still out of breath.

"Why are you running after me!? Weren't you just about to accept that girl's feelings?!" Zander shouted angrily.

"W-what?! No-!" Luke started.

"You should go back to her! Don't let ME get in your way!" Zander said, cutting him off.

Luke was silent for a few seconds. "Zander..." he said in a pleading manner.

"Why isn't he leaving? I can't stand this...It's too painful!" Zander thought. "JUST LEAVE ALREADY!!" He shouted again.

Then his childhood friend said nine words that he truly wasn't expecting to hear. Nine words that changed everything.

"I don't like that girl, Zander! I like YOU!" Luke shouted.

Zander's eyes went as wide as saucers. "What?.." he whispered as he turned to face the taller boy.

Luke was silent for a few seconds as he was forming the right sentences in his head, before finally saying them out loud. "Zander..I'm in love with you.. I have been...for a really long time. That song Hailey sang for me? I wrote that about you!" he confessed.

"I-I thought you only saw me as your childhood friend?.." Zander asked.

"You've always been more than that! I wanted to tell you for so long, but recently...It seems like all I do is make you feel uncomfortable.. I could never seem to find the right time, or the right way to tell you. And..I'm probably making you uncomfortable now!" Luke admitted.

"YOU'RE WRONG!" Zander shouted. "You've never made me feel uncomfortable! When you would get close, I was scared because I didn't want you to notice how I really felt about you! So I...Pushed you away. I just wanted to protect our friendship! I..Didn't want to lose you..." A single tear rolled down his cheek as he said the last sentence.

Luke smiled as his eyes also began filling with tears. "Zander...You'll never lose me..!"

Both boys remained silent once again, allowing the red and orange leaves to flutter past them in a soft autumn breeze. They just stood there staring into each other's eyes, sunflower-yellow meeting lavender-purple. Then Luke started making his way towards Zander, though the shorter boy stopped him. "I-I'm not like Stacy, you know? I'm uptight, and I'll probably call you names a lot..." Zander said.

Luke just chuckled. "I know..."

"I'm stubborn, a little selfish at times, and I get jealous easil-" Zander continued, though he didn't get to finish his sentence as Luke had walked up to him and cupped his face in his hands, slowly closing the gap between them. Zander's eyes widened in surprise, though he soon closed them and kissed back, slowly reaching for Luke's scarf.

After a while Luke broke the kiss and smiled at Zander. "You're also charming, witty and you're extremely handsome! And on top of that..You have a beautiful smile..." Luke said.

"L-LUKE!! Don't say such embarrassing things!" Zander stuttered as his cheeks went a rosy red.

Luke softly chuckled. "I love you, Zander..."

Zander smiled. "I love you too!"

Then they pulled into a warm embrace. This was the beginning of a new chapter of both of their lives. An everlasting love.

Or so they thought...

End of flashback

Our "friends" knew you and I would end

Flashback

"Oh look, there goes Mozart and his drummer-freak boyfriend!" Drew said as Luke and Zander were walking to their next class. Zander grumbled in annoyance as Luke put an arm around his shoulder to try and calm him down.

"Bet they wouldn't even last for two seasons!" Henry shouted, making his friends laugh.

Zander spun around, shooting an icy glare at Henry. "Says the one who hasn't got a partner, let alone KISSED anyone before!" he spat.

This made the trio remain silent. Luke quickly but gently spun Zander back around as they began speed-walking to the Math classroom.

End of flashback

At the end of the month
We said we would run

Flashback

It was now the end of February. Zander and Luke had been together for nearly four months, and their relationship was still going strong.

The two lovers had decided to just run away from it all for a few hours and spend some time together. No teasing from their family members, no rude remarks from their bullies, just the two of them alone. However, their plans were canceled as Zander's step-father told them that he had gotten a job as a music teacher in England, and that they were moving in a few hours. When Zander asked him why he hadn't told them sooner, he said that he wanted the surprise them, unaware of how much it upset the two.

A few hours later Luke was standing outside the car, longingly staring at Zander as it drove off. The love of his life had gone away, taking Luke's happiness and their childhood memories with him.

End of flashback

Luke had decided to go out for a walk. As he was walking, he came across the old Elementary school. He decided to take a look at it again. He went inside and and almost immediately spotted it.

Their tree.

The tree under which they started their twelve years of friendship.

The tree where they have made so many memories together...

As Luke walked past the tree he couldn't help but wonder if they would meet again in the future...Recover their friendship, or even their relationship...

"Don't be stupid!" Luke scolded himself, shaking his head vigorously. "Your love is no more!"

"It was only meant for that summer..."
