~ ~ Jenna ~ ~
Friday afternoon I found myself sitting opposite Dr Kahn, waiting for Tony. Glancing at my watch, I couldn't believe he was late.
Dr Kahn smiled before looking at his watch... for the third time. "Let's start, shall we?"
My knee bopped up and down, worried we weren't clear of the woods just yet with Ava's recovery. "Yes. Sorry Dr Kahn, I know you're a busy man." Annoyance with Tony shuttled across my shoulders. He was the one who had insisted the meeting be held at this time so he could attend.
"You don't need to be worried, Mrs—Jenna." His eyes fell to my knee as I placed my hand over it to stop it jittering.
"I'm thrilled with Ava's progress. Dialysis will continue to help and aid her recovery and I will be content to release her for you to take home by the middle of next week all going well. And from there she will come to outpatients for her ongoing treatment."
I breathed a sigh of relief; this was brilliant news. "Thank you, I can't thank you enough, Dr Kahn."
"No need to thank me, Jenna. But we still need to be vigilant." He picked up his pen and scribbled some notes. "I want some to run some more tests today to monitor her protein levels and I have asked the dietician to speak with you regarding a plan to move forward as although too much protein is not good. The dialysis removes most so that will need to be increased with the right proteins."
I nodded. "I understand, whatever it takes."
"Good, I have no doubt she is on her way to a full recovery." He put his pen down and stood, and I rose from my chair as he offered his hand, but I still felt a little on edge.
"Trust me, Jenna." He smiled warmly, walking around his desk to open his door. On the other side, about to knock, was a disgruntled Tony. I restrained an eye roll and pushed down my irritation.
Dr Kahn looked at me before shifting his attention back to Tony. "Ah, Mr Valentino. I have just brought Ava's mother up to date on your daughter's progress. Would you like me to run through the plan with you? I have five minutes before I'm needed somewhere."
Tony breezed past me without even a glance. "Yes, thank you doctor, I appreciate your time and I apologize for my lateness." His tone said he was anything but sorry. Arrogant asshole...
The door closed, and I finally released a long, slow breath. Ava would be okay and I could take her home next week. Practically skipping towards the elevator, I was excited to tell her today I'd found us a new home.
Fifteen minutes later, Tony walked into Ava's room. "Daddy." She beamed brightly.
He walked over and kissed her. "How's my baby girl doing today? The doctor told me you can go home next week."
