Camila listened intently as she pulled more clothing from the dryer, folding it as she went. She could hear the kids playing in the living room and smiled warmly when she heard the twins squealing in laughter about something. She loved their family and wouldn't trade it for anything. Once the dryer was completely empty, she started throwing clothes from the washer into it when she heard Taylor call out.
"Mami? Momma... I think something's wrong with Emma!"
As soon as the words left his mouth, Camila forgot about everything that she was doing and rushed out through the kitchen to get out to the living room.
Lauren was in the kitchen starting to prep everything for dinner that night. They had gotten into a pretty good routine with the kids and their jobs. Things literally could not be going any better. Lauren had just finished chopping all of the vegetables and was moving over to the fridge to pull out the meat. She smiled as she looked out to the living room, listening to Taylor, Lily, and Cameron call for the twins to come over to them. Lauren looked up when she heard Taylor calling for them, saying something was wrong with Emma. She shut the door and walked quickly to the living room, "What's wrong, Tay?" She asked walking over to Emma, scooping her up off the ground.
Camila looked between the kids once in the room. She was a little confused as to what Taylor was talking about as Lauren scooped up the little girl. "She seems okay to me." Camila reached up to run her fingers through her hair, causing the girl to smile and squeal some. Taylor shook his head then.
"Just watch..." Taylor said as he moved to the other side of the room, behind his sister.
Camila pursed her lips as she watched their oldest go behind where Ethan was. When the boy was looking the other way, he yelled his name from behind him, making Ethan jump and turn around to look at him. "Okay... What are you showing us exactly?"
Taylor huffed as he went over toward Emma and stayed out of her sight. "Emma!" He yelled. He yelled it a few more times and Camila slowly realized what he was hinting at as the girl didn't respond to him at all. She just kept looking toward Camila with a smile on her face.
Lauren sighed softly as she looked to her wife. She looked at Taylor and smiled sadly, "Thanks for letting us know, bud. Your mami and I need to go talk." She said, kissing Emma's cheek and setting her back on the ground where she crawled over to her siblings. Lauren took her wife's hand and lead her into the kitchen.
Camila met her wife's gaze and sighed softly. "Thank you, Tay... keep an eye on your siblings for us okay?" The boy nodded to them and went back to the others. Camila let Lauren lead her into the kitchen before she sat down at the table and just looked toward her wife and daughter. "How did we not see this sooner?" She asked softly before reaching out to take Emma. "You can't hear us... can you baby girl?" She asked and just watched Emma look between her and Lauren before smiling at them and bouncing some in Camila's lap.
Lauren sighed softly, "I don't know." She said as her wife spoke to Emma. She noticed that the little girl didn't react at all. Lauren sighed as she looked at her wife. "I mean. I know there are things we can do about this. I learned about it in school..." She said. She sighed softly. "I'll call the pediatrician after we eat." She said as she looked to Camila. "What do you think we should do?"
Camila ran her fingers gently through Emma's hair before bringing the girl closer to her and holding her head against her chest. "What can we do about it? I don't know much about the medical stuff like you do." She rested her chin gently on Emma's head and smiled as she felt the girl playing with the strings of her hoodie and relax into her. "Right now, I'm just hating myself for not seeing it sooner. We should have noticed something was off... We both know she doesn't try to talk like Ethan does. She babbles some, but it doesn't even remotely sound like words."
