"So you're seriously going to make me do this?" I asked Alex. We were in Science class and doing a lab.

"You have to. If you didn't have to, I wouldn't make you, but you do." He said shrugging.

"What if I get caught? I've lived here for like less than a week, people will think I'm a criminal!" I told him.

"You won't get caught. All of us did it." Alex tried to calm me down but it wasn't helping, at all.

"But I'm a girl. There should be a different option for girls." I pleaded.

"If you want to hang out with us, you gotta be one of us. Without stealing a chicken, you ain't one of us. Even Cole and Andrew did it!" He argued.

Andrew was Alex's younger brother. He's a freshman. Cole is Andrew's friend, who I will add is very attractive.

"You're all boys though!" I argued.

"Maddie, it'll be fine. We'll all be there with you. Robert, Tyler, Zach, Drew, Cole, and I. We'll be with you, just not allowed to help." He explained. It didn't help that attractive guys will be watching me steal a chicken.

"Fine. I'll do it." I said.

"What?" He said looking up from the microscope.

"I said I'll steal the chicken."

"Oh. Okay. Thought you said something else." He said looking uneasy. What was up with him?

---------

"Robert she actually is going to do it." Alex said.

"Well then let her, you can't tell her you were lying or she'll hold it over you forever." Robert said.

"But what if she got caught? I'd feel terrible!" Alex exclaimed.

"Then convince her not to do it. Now quiet, she's coming over here." Robert said shoving a forkful of taco salad in his mouth.

"You guys ready for tonight? I was looking online and I saw a farm property like a couple of miles away from my house. We could walk through the woods and get there." I said to them.

"I don't know. It's supposed to rain tonight.. maybe we can just let you in the crew without doing it, if you want." Alex said.

"Alex, it isn't supposed to rain.. and no. I have to get in the crew just like the rest of you did. It's only fair." I argued.

"We'll be by at like seven to go." Robert told me.

"Okay. Wait. What do we do with the chickens anyways?" I asked.

"We let them go in the woods." Alex said.

"That's stupid." I said laughing before eating my lunch.

---------------

"Are you really going to make her do this?" Cole asked Alex.

"She won't not do it so I guess, yeah." Alex responded.

"Just tell her you were joking!" He argued.

"No way. She'll think I'm a liar!" Alex said.

"But you are a liar.." Cole said.

"Oh shut up." Alex said.

"So I have to go through all this trouble just to let the chicken go?" I asked Alex.

"Yeah, we don't want to hurt them so we just let them go and they find their way back to the farm." He explained.

What he didn't realize is that I knew this whole thing was a lie and he was about to get the best scaring of his life within the next twenty minutes.

"Lets do this." I said grabbing a pair of gardening gloves and walking towards the woods. The guys all followed whispering behind me. Phase One: get the guys to go to Sherman's Farm.

We then got to the farm and located the chicken coop I quickly went inside and grabbed the chicken and snuck back out. Easier than the old man said it would be. The guys began to panic. Phase Two: freak the guys out that I had actually stolen the chicken.

"C'mon lets go!" Alex said to me as I looked at the chicken.

The house light then came on and an old man came out in the porch with a rifle.

"Who's out on my god damn farm?!" He screamed. Phase Three: Have Old Man Sherman pretend he was going to kill us.

We began to run back to woods as he chased up. I ran carefully not trying to bother the chicken.

"Maddie drop the chicken!" Alex screamed.

"No way! Not until we get to the woods!" I said, continuing to run.

Old Man Sherman had filled his rifle with blanks and began "shooting" at us.

"Oh shit!" Alex screamed.

Everyone began to run faster and we were only a few yards away from the woods when I "tripped".

"Alex!" I screamed for help. The chicken escaped from my grasp but the fall had actually hurt me so I struggled to get up. Old Man Sherman was only twenty feet away when Alex was helping me up.

"Where's my chicken?!" He screamed.

"She let it go! It's running around the field!" Alex said as he panicked.

"That was my best egg laying chicken! I should kill both of y'all!" Old Man Sherman played up.

"Please don't kill us!" Alex said on the verge of tears.

"I think he has had enough." I told Old Man Sherman, he began to laugh.

"What?" Alex said confused.

"I knew you were lying. So this is what you get." I said.

"So I'm not going to die?" Alex asked.

"Only if you don't lie to me again." I said.

"Thank god!" He screamed as he ran to the woods where the rest of the crew was laughing their asses off.

I thanked Old Man Sherman for his help then caught up with the guys and began to make fun of Alex.

I think I'm going to like it here in La Vernia.
