"That was low." Alex said as we walked back to my house through the woods. It was only eight o'clock so we decided to pile into Alex's SUV and go out for ice cream.
"Lying to me saying that I had to steal a chicken was low." I responded.
"I thought it was funny.. until he started shooting at us.." Cole said. Everyone laughed.
"This is probably the best ice cream I've ever had." I said licking my ice cream.
"The Dairy Bar is basically where everyone in La Vernia goes for ice cream." Robert pointed out.
"Well, I can see why!" I said.
"So Maddie, where did you move here from?" Cole asked.
"Yeah, we never talked about that in Science or Freedman's class." Alex said.
"I'm came here from a small town in New Hampshire, but before that I lived in Florida."
"So how did you end up here?" Robert asked.
"My parents decided it'd be best for all of us to get out of one small cramped up town and move on to the next." I said sarcastically.
"Makes sense. I mean La Vernia has less than 5,000 people here.. what was the population of the last town you lived in?" Robert asked.
"Well, the town itself had like less than 2,000 but like with the surrounding towns that basically were a whole was about like 10,000 maybe." I said. They were lost so I decided to stop.
"So, how do you like it here so far?" Andrew asked.
"I mean other than the fact that some asshole told me I had to steal a chicken just so I could hang out with him, I like it a lot." I said winking at Alex.
"Okay, so maybe I took it a little far but at least I didn't hire an old guy to shoot at you!" Alex defended himself.
"I didn't hire him, he said he'd like to teach you a lesson on how to respect girls." I said.
"Well, still. He shot as us!" Alex argued.
"They were blanks! C'mon, don't be stupid!" I said back.
"Guys, we know you like each other but we don't need to see you flirt." Robert said laughing.
My face turned red. "I don't like Alex." I stated clearly.
"Yeah, she doesn't even know me and she already thinks I'm an asshole." Alex said.
"Plus, Alex isn't even the best looking guy here." I said. Oh shit, now they're going to want to know who is the hottest.
"Then who is?" Robert said giving me a look.
"I'm not telling you because you played along with him." I said.
"Not fair! I had to follow the bro code!" Robert said.
"No you didn't!" I said laughing.
"Austin told you never to use that as an excuse." Alex pointed out.
"Well Austin doesn't have a girlfriend either so his point isn't relevant." Robert said. I had no clue who this Austin kid was so I didn't say anything.
"So Maddie are you going bowling with us tomorrow?" Zach asked.
"I was never told about this.." I said looking at him skeptically.
"The crew goes bowling at Johnson's Bowling Alley every Saturday night. They do glow in the dark from ten to midnight." Alex explained.
"Glow in the dark bowling? Hell yes, that sounds freaking awesome!" I basically screamed.
"Well, don't be too excited because you're going down. I'm a pro at bowling." Cole said.
"We'll see tomorrow night then huh?" I said winking at him.
"Well, it's like ten so I should probably start bringing you guys home." Alex said.
We all piled into his SUV then started heading back. His house was pretty close to the ice cream place so he dropped off Andrew and Cole there then brought the rest of the guys home. I was the last person since I lived the farthest away. We pulled up next to my house and he put the car in park.
"Thanks for giving me a ride." I said to him as I unbuckled my seat belt.
"You know Maddie, the only reason I lied to you about the chicken thing was to seem cool, plus after lying I didn't want you to hate me for lying to you." He said.
"Well, I wouldn't have hated you but hey, at least we all got a laugh out of it. I'll text you tomorrow about bowling okay?" I said.
"Okay. Bye Maddie."
"Bye Alex." I said smiling before I closed the door and walked to my house.
This is one weird ass, yet amazing town.
---------------
What the hell do you wear when going bowling in the dark? Neon so you glow too? Or do you wear regular clothes? See, this is why I need a friend that's a girl. I guess I could just wear a pair of pants and a random shirt.. but that's no fun. God dang it, this sucks. My parents were a little scared at first but they agreed to let me going bowling with the guys then stay the night at Alex's house, only if I slept on the floor or alone in a bed. They said they'd make sure that happened. How? I have no idea. I texted Alex to let him know what was going on and he told me he'd pick me up at nine so that we would have time to get everyone else then reserve a lane before everyone showed up.
I finally decided what to wear. Mint green crop pants, Vans even though I knew I'd have to rent shoes, and a loose black muscle top with a cross made by embellished rhinestones. I straightened my hair then put it up in a high pony and put on a white plastic headband. I put on a little extra mascara and some lip gloss. Ready to go.
"Maddie! Alex is here!" My mom yelled up the stairs.
"Okay!" I yelled back down before grabbing my brown cross body purse and leaving my room. I ran down the stairs and dragged Alex out the door before my parents could embarrass me.
"Lets go!" I said as he pulled out of the driveway and we went to pick the rest of the crew up.
