Thank you Shifa (I think that's your name, sorry if I'm wrong) for voting and commenting!
I quietly yawned and tried standing still but if you have been standing for 3 hours your feet tend to ache. Roofa was standing beside me and she quietly glared at me while I gave her the stink eye. Javaria didn't look up at all at the guy who came for her hand, while the guy couldn't stop staring at her.
"Yes, Javaria is giving her final exam in a week and then she will inshallah be done with school." Everyone said "Inshallah" back and the guy's mom nodded in approval in Javaria's direction (not like she was looking in the first place)
Suddenly, the guy's mom looked at me and smiled "Who is she? Mashallah she is beautiful." My aunt and I looked at each other and she quickly got up "This is our maid." The guy's mom frowned at that "Oh." Clearly she wouldn't want a maid for her son.
I personally think that's stupid, maid's are amazing! They know how to cook and clean and do basic things that every man longs for in a wife. The worst side could be that she hasn't been to school.
"Uh, would you like anything else?" The guy's mom (I really got to learn there names) Turned back to my aunt and said "No, Javaria is very beautiful and clever Mashallah, however we have to say no." Javaria for the first time looked up and my aunt frowned and did I mention my uncle was here?
He sat there looking just as bored as me, but that little comment made him wide awake. I, myself was shocked because this time Javaria didn't say a word besides the answer's to the auntie's questions.
"We already had an offer before and she has graduated and she mashallah has the intelligence of Albert Einstein." I flinched and looked around the room and the auntie's husband and her son were staring at her in shock then the guy said "But mom, there is no other woman?" The mom glared at him but sighed.
"She is too black." One thing in Pakistan is that the girl has to be white as milk, people here unfortunately care about complexion. Before my aunt could say anything Javaria got up and that's when I knew her reputation was over.
"Me? BLACK? LOOK AT YOUR SON LOOK AT HOW BLACK HE IS! AND WHAT MONEY DO YOU HAVE? HUH? YOU CAN'T EVEN TAKE ME DOWN THE STREET! YOU ALL ARE CHEAP AND HAVE NO TASTE NO MANNER'S NOTHING!"
Roofa touched Javaria's shoulder calming her down, and like a spell broke Javaria blinked and sat down on the couch sighing. My aunt and uncle silently stood there before my aunt said "Javaria is right, how dare you come here and and say all these things? LEAVE." The aunty grabbed her purse and told her son and Husband to get up.
My aunt sat down on the couch with a huff and my uncle silently went back to his room. Javaria started crying and Roofa calmed her down. I stood there not knowing what to do.
"Javaria, I have to go." Javaria nodded while Roofa left, silently closing the door. Since everyone was doing everything silently I decided to silently breath. My aunt suddenly looked up at Javaria her eyes red and puffy "Javaria, please. No one will ever look at you again, work on yourself."
And then she got up and went to the room my uncle was in. I looked back at Javaria and watched as she cried into her hands. I have 4 other cousins on my dad's side. Maheen, Sameen, Samrah, and faisal Bhai back in Canada where I used to live.
Out of all of them, Javaria was my least favorite because she's always been a bitch towards me. I remember coming to Pakistan in grade 5 wanting to be friends with my cousins, I was so disappointed when I was introduced to Javaria because she had no manners.
When she found out I was a book lover, she handed me a book and walked away not looking back at me. She has improved a lot since then, and now looking at her I felt bad.
I sighed and sat down next to her and gently touched her hand "Javaria." She flinched away and got up in a flash "SHUT UP RAYYANA, I DON'T NEED TO HEAR YOUR AWFUL WORDS."
And then she ran into her room slamming the door.
Maybe she didn't change that much after all.
