The Unknown. They are "people" that have magical powers. I CANNOT BE ONE OF THEM! THEY ARE WORTHLESS! THEY ARE EXPERIMENTED ON BY THE GOVERMENT! Most of the unknowns dont make it.

I don't know what to say. All me fears are coming true. Finally the words came to me.

"NO NO NO! IM NOT AN UNKNOWN!" I screamed. "if I am an unknown," I choked up, "I will not be allowed to live! They will experiment on me and kill me!" I sob uncontrolably.

"Avery, listen to me. You have got to run away. Don't tell anyone what you are! Don't trust anyone! I have been planning for this." She runs down the stairs and I follow. She walks up to the wall.

"What are you doing?" I ask. She doesn't respond. She grabs onto the baseboard and lifts. The wall starts lifting up by itself and reveals a hidden room. Inside there is a suitcase and a backpack. I walk in and open the backpack. It is filled with canned and dehydrated foods, water, and a knife. I zip it back up and open the suitcase. It is filled with clothes, soap, and 2 pairs of tennis shoes.

"Hurry up. You have to leave now. The authorities will find out soon." She rushes me up the stairs and out the door. "I will try and find you when it is safe. That may be a long time, so remember those hunting lessons that I gave you. they will come in handy."

"How come you did everything. What about dad? Why didn't he help?"

"You'll find out eventually. It's not important right now. You must go. I love you."

"Wait mom! What about Kendall?"

"I'm sorry, you can't see him. You can't even trust him. He could tell the government. It's not safe, there's something off about him. I don't like him." Before I could protest, my mom shoved the suitcase into my hands and slams the door in my face. How could my mom not trust Kendall?! He would never sell my secret to the government! Would he? No, no he wouldn't! He loves me. Or so I thought.

I quickly get bored. I walk and walk. I am in the middle of town. I hide in the shadows, trying not to draw attention to myself. I choke back the tears. People stop to talk to me, to ask what's wrong. I keep on walking and ignore them. That's the problem with the government. They taught everyone to be nice. Those who aren't, are sent away. The government is strict about that. They are strict about everything. Marriage, kindness, how many kids you can have, etc. You must be married by 17. If you aren't, you are banished. Nobody knows what happens during banishment, but if someone is banished, they are never heard from again. You can get banished from not being married by 17, having more than 4 kids, not being kind, committing any crime, harboring an unknown, etc.

I continue to walk. I finally make it out of the city. I walk in the forest. Behind me, I hear a twig snap. I whip around and see someone. A boy.
