Ben jolted awake from his nap when he heard knocks on his hotel door. He knew it was Cassie, so he leapt up from his bed and was at the door in two steps. The moment he opened it, he was embraced in his wife's warm arms.
He picked her up in the hug and brought her inside, kicking the door shut with his foot. He sat them on the edge of the hotel bed where she engulfed her legs around his waist.
They didn't talk. The room was filled with soft sobs and staggered breaths. Ben was running his fingers through her hair and running them down her back. He eventually rested them on her butt and gave it a squeeze and pulled her closer. He didn't mean it in a sexual way, he just wanted her as close as possible.
After several minutes of silence, Cassie buried her face into his neck and cried, "I lost the baby." Ben closed his eyes and let more tears fall down his cheeks. He nodded as he croaked out, "I know. It's alright, baby."
He kissed her head several times and held her even tighter. "I'm so glad you're alive," she cried. "All I could think about on the plane is what could have happened to you. I hate the thought of living in this world without you, Ben."
He rested his lips on her temple as he said, "That's why I begged for my life. I begged so I could see you and hold you again. All I could think about was both you and Aiden. Bloody hell, it was so horrible, Cass."
As much as she didn't want to hear the details of what happened, she knows he's holding a lot in that he needs to let out. So, she asked the dreaded question; "What happened?"
It took him almost an hour to tell her the entirety of what happened, including after when he and his friends had to go to a nearby village for help and food. When he was done, Cassie clung onto him once again.
Eventually, they got into bed and held each other under the covers. Ben was staring intently at his wife as he continued to run his fingers through her hair. "I'm so sorry, Cass," he told her. "I'm sorry to put you through this. It's my fault you lost the baby, I know it is."
She shushed him and placed a soft kiss on his lips. "Don't ever think that," she told him. "I was already having stomach pains. They said there wouldn't have been anything they could have done because everything looked to be fine. Unfortunately, it just happens sometimes. But we can try again in a few months. We'll get you a baby girl, I promise."
He let out a soft laugh and nodded through his tears. "I love you so, so much," he said. "God himself wouldn't be able to describe how much. You are my whole damn world." They kissed softly and tenderly for an hour, only stopping to breathe every so often.
They didn't have sex, even though they desperately wanted to, because Cassie wasn't allowed for two weeks. Still, Cassie did give him the most memorable blow job he's ever had. He desperately - desperately - wanted to return the favor in some way, but she said he could save it for two weeks from now.
They didn't go to sleep until very late in the late, but it was the best sleep they've had in years.
Ben had a new view on life. He never realized how quick it could be taken away. He didn't realize how quickly his family could be taken away from him. He promised - he swore - to himself and Cassie that he wouldn't take any of what he has, or will have, for granted ever again.
