I froze.
Unable to fully process the information I'd just heard. Jess kept her eyes on my as I walked up to the bank were the others had sat and were beginning to eat. I just stared into space for a bit, before unlocking my phone and reading back through some of our messages from today.
Henry: I want to be with you :( x
Henry: I can't wait to see you again ;) x
Henry: How did Jack manage to get a hot girl like you? ;) x
I felt sick. How had I believed him when he said they were about to break up? I knew I shouldn't have been so affected by it, but there was something about him that made me feel like I had never felt before. I know I sounded cliche and it was amusing that I had worded it this way, but there was something different about this, and although the lying was a big issue, I had a feeling this wouldn't be the end.
I was also surprised I'd managed to have such a in depth conversation with my conscience and no one had noticed....
Back to reality Scarlett...
I came back from my daydream to find Jess staring at me.
"Scar did you hear what I just said?!" Jess' voice filled my ears.
"Eh?"
"The boys have already gone in, come on!"
Before I knew it, I was being pulled up and chucked into the river that ran alongside the park. Thankfully, I'd guessed that we'd end up going in the water, so I text Jess beforehand and told her to put a bikini on under her clothes. So I had thought I was pretty prepared.
I just about managed to whip off my top before Jess chucked me in, it's a shame the same couldn't be said about my shorts...
They were absolutely sodden.
"Here I'll help you get them off," Jack winked.
I'M SORRY WHAT
I laughed nervously, "Umm no it's ok, I've got it." I removed my shorts revealing a pair of blue, purple, green and white bikini bottoms, which matched the bikini top with the same colours and pattern.
Jess, unfortunately had time to remove her clothes before getting in the water so she was wearing a navy blue and white striped bikini, with a bow tied in the middle of the top. I remember Jess picking it out when we went shopping once. She loved it front the moment she set eyes on it, said it gave her 'sailor style' whatever that means!
As for the boys, they were just in ordinary black shorts. Jess was trying so hard not to stare at Charlie's body.
Both of the boys are very well built and don't lack any muscle, so they weren't the worst people to be spending a day in a river with shirtless!
Like I mean, Charlie was pretty buff, he had a six pack and good arms, but Jack...I'd forgotten how toned he was! I remember 6 months ago lying in his bed whilst he did his ab workouts for the evening and I complained about it, all he replied with was, "You'll be thankful for it soon babe," before kissing me on the nose, and going downstairs to make me a cup of tea. Everything was so much simpler back then.
But this is about now, and those abs aren't my abs to look at anymore and he isn't mine to kiss anymore. He's hers.
We spent the next half an hour or so mucking about in the river, Jack kept picking me up and putting me on his shoulders and Charlie did the same for Jess. All in all, it was a sweet afternoon. Towards the end, when we'd all dried off and put our clothes back on, (apart from Jack's t-shirt, which had sadly gone missing) Jess and Charlie were sat on the grass mucking about, so Jack and I were sat on some swings.
"They really should just stop flirting and admit they like each other," I smiled at the idea.
"True true. Then we could all go on double dates!"
I looked Jack directly in the eye to see if he'd addressed his last sentence.
"Umm..yeah, Charlie and Jess, and you and Ellie! I'll cook the food," I laughed, but it wasn't sincere enough and Jack saw right through it.
"Yeah...about me and Ellie. She's lovely and everything.."
"But?..."
He shifted nervously and couldn't quite meet my eye.
"She's not you."
