Just at that moment, my doorbell rang.
"Must be the pizza." I grinned maybe a little too happily.
I opened my door and my jaw dropped.
"Robby? ROBBY!!!!!" I leaped straight into my brother's arms like a child.
"Nice to see you too little sister." He said as he hugged me. He put me down and fake rubbed his back to emphasise that I'd supposedly hurt him. I slapped his arm which he then went to fake rub.
He laughed, "Hey Scar, what you crying for loser?"
I hadn't even noticed that tears had began to streak my face.
"Scar's crying? I didn't know the pizza delivery exchange could be so emotional." Jessie's voice drew closer as she walked to the door to join me.
"Hey Scar what's keeping you so...ROBBY!" Jess too ran into my brother's embrace.
"Hello my little sister from another mister." Robs loved Jess as if she was his own sister, and treated her like it too. And seeing as Jess only had a little sister, she liked having someone being so protective over her, we both did. Sometimes that is.
I wiped my happy tears and tried to fix my makeup before dragging my big brother into our kitchen.
~
Thankfully, Robby had met both of the boys before, so it didn't really phase him that they were both sat in the kitchen drinking tea. Within 5 minutes, the three of them were talking and laughing about Robby's travels.
Brilliant. I thought to myself how I hadn't seen my brother in 6 months but already he was more interested in talking to the boys instead of me! I stuck out my bottom lip like a sulking kid when the doorbell rang.
"This better be the pizza," Jess said, "Because I am not making anymore cups of tea for anymore unexpected visitors! She placed Robby's cup of tea down in front of him and went to join me at the door.
"That'll be £45 darling,"
I smiled politely at the man standing at my door, but as I went to grab the money from the pot where mum keeps the 'emergency fund', I felt an arm around my shoulder. Jess must've felt it too as she squeaked.
"I'll get this one little sister." My brother grinned at me.
"Robbles you don't have to!" But it was too late, he'd already fished out a £50 note and was handing it to the delivery man.
"Keep the change mate."
"Thank you mate," the delivery man directed his statement at Robby, but looked at me as he said it.
"Anyways..." he said, still holding my glance, "have a nice evening guys." But as he winked at me, I felt an arm around my waist. I looked up to see Jack's eyes fixed on the delivery man. I hadn't noticed that everyone else had gone inside and started eating, but Jack must've come to check on me, and walked in at the wrong moment.
"Come on babe lets go back inside." I tugged at Jack's arm, but I'd forgotten the extent of his strength and ended up practically sitting on his forearm. One thing was for sure, my feet were no longer touching the ground.
"Mate listen to your girl,"
"I'm not his girl." I snapped back.
"Could've fooled me." He looked me up and down and made my skin crawl, it wasn't that he was ugly, it was something else. He wasn't Jack...Henry. Jack? Or Henry?
"Anyway, considering you're single, I was thinking maybe, I could get your number?.." He raised his eyebrows in hope.
But before I could answer, Jack cut me off.
"She's taken. Not by me. But by someone. So if you don't mind mate, leave the girl alone. Unless you want me to get him out here? Charlie?"
I sighed the largest sigh of relief which Jack interpreted as a sign of thanks for getting rid of the delivery man. But it was something completely different entirely. I thought Jack knew about Henry and I. Now that would not be good.
Jack woke me from my daydream, this time him pulling me inside. I had no need to resist so I let him carry me back inside. For some reason, I suddenly felt drained of everything. That was until, I saw my pizza, well what was left of it.
"JESSIE FLORENCE SMITH"
"How do you know it's me?!"
"Well, Charlie's allergic to pesto, Robby doesn't understand the point in putting 'a pasta sauce on a pizza' and Jack's been outside with me the whole time, plus he knows what happens if you take my food." I met Jack's eye and held the eye contact for a couple of seconds before both of us broke free and said simultaneously, "You better run."
That was it, Jess took to her feet and ran into the guest room. I chased her but she'd already ran up the stairs.
Eventually I caught her 'having a lie down' on mum's bed. I jumped on the bed next to her and put my legs on top of hers.
"Munchkin?" I asked with quite possibly my greatest puppy dog eyes ever.
"Yes Gremlin?" Jess laughed at the creativity of her nickname for me as if it was first time she'd ever addressed me with it.
I ignored the nickname but replied anyway.
"What do you think I should do?"
"I think you know what you should do." Jess replied calmly.
As much as I wished I didn't know what to do, I did.
So reluctantly, I got up off the bed with Jess, a mixture of butterflies and elephants emerging from my stomach. I went to find Jack with Jess trailing behind me.
We found the boys in the kitchen where we'd left them. They were all crowded round what looked like Jack's laptop, I turned my head so I could see the array of stickers and post-it notes shoved on the laptop case. Yep, definitely Jack's
I thought to myself before clearing my throat, "Jack? Can I talk to you, in private?"
"Yeah of course beaut."
He began to get up from his place in front of his laptop.
That's when it happened.
