Katherine's P.O.V.

"KATHERINE, LOOK OUT!" I heard Steve yell just before everything went black. When I regained consciousness I heard yelling.

"Somebody call the police." A woman's voice said.

"Keep her on her back don't mover her." Another person said. At this point I couldn't tell if it was a man or woman.

I then heard a familiar voice, but I couldn't tell who it was. "Katherine, keep your eyes open, keep your eyes open! Stay with us! C'mon Kathy!" The person yelled.

I felt myself go in and out of consciousness, and I tried to hold onto one thought but it was too hard, and I ended up passing out again.

The next time I woke up, I was in a hospital bed. I looked over to the side of my bed and saw Steve, asleep with his head on the edge of the bed. "S-Steve?" My voice was coarse and raspy, I almost didn't recognize it. His head shot up from the state of his sleep. "Katherine!" He exclaimed. "You're okay!" I don't think I've ever seen him more happy. But then I looked closer, his eyes had bags underneath them and were bloodshot. It looked like he hadn't slept in a while.

Then Steve got up from his chair, "I will be right back, I'm gonna go get a doctor." He said as he walked to the door. He opened the door, and started yelling, "DOCTOR, DOCTOR! CODE BLUE, CODE BLUE, ROOM 206"

"No Steve not code blue! Do you know what code blue means?"

"No!" He said "All I know is that people say it all the time when they want the doctors to come quickly."

"Steve, code blue means someone is dying! And clearly I'm not dying you dumb ass! Code blue is used when a patient goes into cardiac or respiratory arrest or commonly when a patient's condition deteriorates severely to the extent that the health care personnel believe the patient may deteriorate further. And that is called and imminent arrest."

"HOW DO YOU KNOW THAT?" Steve yelled.

"I READ IT AT THE LIBRARY!" I hollered back. He just looked confused. "Why do you go to the library? Actually, who goes to the library?!"

"Now is not the time to bully me Steve."

As soon as I said that, 2 doctors and 3 nurses rushed into the room. "Start the CPR!" One doctor shouted.

"No!" I said, "I'm not dying! That's my stupid friend, he doesn't know what hes talking about!" All the doctors looked pissed as they looked over at Steve. "Sir, I'm afraid your gonna have to leave now." One of the nurses said.

"No! Let him stay! I need him! Hes my best friend!" I said as I watched Steve's smile fade into a frown. "Alright, I guess it would be okay, but no more saying stuff like that." One of the nurses said. The doctor said I was okay besides the fact that my back was broken. So that's just great!

Steve's P.O.V.

When I walked back into the room after the doctor finished examining Katherine, she had tears on her face. I walked back to the chair by the side of the bed, "Whats wrong Kathy?" I asked. I knew she didn't like anyone calling her that, but she didn't to mind when I said it. She wiped away her tears and began talking.

"The doctor said I broke my back, and I am paralyzed from the waist down. The only way I have a chance of walking again is if I get some special surgery that Two-Bit can't afford."

"Actually about that, the people that hit you were 3 drunk socs, and Two-Bit wants to sue them. So if he ends up winning the case he will have enough money to pay for your surgery!" Katherine's expression changed from sad and gloomy to a more excited expression. "Really!?" She said excitedly. "Yes, if he wins the case. The trial is in a few weeks and you need to be there."

Two-Bit's P.O.V.

*The night Katherine got hit*

Steve just pushed me to the ground and ran out chasing after Katherine.

Then after about 2 minutes, I heard screaming and police sirens. Steve came running in, "Katherine just got hit by a couple drunk socs in a car!" He said out of breath.

"What?"

"C'mon let's go they are taking her to the hospital she is out cold."

Me and Steve ran down the road and got into the ambulance, I was so worried about Katherine. I hope shes okay.

We had to stay in the waiting room for a bit, by this point the rest of the gang was there.

Then the doctor came, "So , I have good news and bad news. Which would you like first?" The doctor said.

"Bad news" I said desperately.  "Okay so the bad news is, she is asleep and we don't know when she might wake up. It should be soon though." He sounded so calm as he said this, as if it was an everyday thing.

"Okay and the good news?" Steve asked. "The good news is that her back is broken-"

"I thought this was good news?" Ponyboy shouted. "I'm getting there. Now, her back may be broken but, there is a surgery that she can have but its really expensive and there is a chance it won't work."

"How much?" I asked. "$500" (around $5,816.56 in 2021)

$500? Where am supposed to get $500?

"Okay, Thanks doc." I said. The doctor walked away and it was just the seven of us.

**At the Curtis House**

"Where am I gonna get $500 from?" I said falling back onto the couch of the Curtis house.

"Maybe you can stop drinking for a bit, save up some money." Ponyboy suggested.

"Ya right! You wish." I said.

"You know Two-Bit, you can sue those socs?" Darry asked.

"What do you mean sue them?" I asked.

"Well, it was a hit and run, they committed a crime, and they hurt Katherine." Darry said.

"A hit and run is a collision that results in the death or serious injury of anyone will almost always result in felony hit-and-run charges. Even a hit-and-run accident resulting in significant property damage can result in a felony charge in some states. However, if no one was injured in the collision, the charge will usually be a misdemeanor." Ponyboy said.

"Shut up Pony, now is not the time for the 'scientific definition' of a hit-and-run. Stop acting like Katherine." I said using air quotes around 'scientific definition'

"Sorry, but Katherine told me that last week so I just remembered it I guess." Pony said as a matter of factly.

"Can we stop talking about Katherine and the accident? I don't want to think about that right now." Steve said.

I looked up at Darry from my spot on the couch, "Shut up Steve. Anyways, Darry really? Like I can actually sue them?" I asked. "Really." He said, and I decided that's what I'm gonna do.

"Alright! Thanks Dar-Bear!"

"DON'T call me that. But no problem Two-Bit." He chuckled.
