I didn't think I'd meet Danielle's mum in this situation.

Danielle is driving us up to the front porch of her mum's house in Summerfield, Birmingham, I can't help but get more and more nervous as we approach the door.

'Stop worrying. You look fine.' Danielle throws me a glance with a mumble, 'She'll like you anyway.'

I smile at her in return, feeling better.

As soon as she rings the doorbell, a ginger-haired woman opens the door with a warm smile on her face.

'I've been waiting for you two. Come on in.' She motions us to go in and closes the door after us.

'Audrey, meet Sage Carlos, my intern.' Danielle tilts her head and says matter-of-factly, 'Sage, meet Audrey Lawson, my mother.'

'Nice to meet you, Ms Lawson.' I offer my hand and shake it with Ms Lawson's. 'And this is the red wine Danielle helped me pick, hope you like it.'

Danielle's mum takes the wine and smiles, 'Oh, dear, thank you for this. And call me Audrey, no need to be so formal.' She leads Danielle and I into the living room.

'Told you she'd like you.' Danielle leans down and whispers in my ear, making me giggle.

'There is still time before I start making dinner. Should we talk about what you came here for first?' Audrey asks.

I nervously look up at Danielle, Danielle gives me a small smile.

'Yes, that would be lovely.' I answer with a nod.

'Brilliant. Also, would you like some tea?' She motions the teapot on the coffee table as we all sit down on the long couch.

'Yes, thank you.' I know it'd be rude to refuse a cup of tea...or the delicious-looking biscuits on the plate.

'Have some chocolate biscuits, too. They go well with the tea.' As if Audrey can read minds, she pushes the plate towards me.

'Did you make them yourself?' Danielle questions with an arched brow.

'Of course.' Audrey gives her a dead look, 'I said I'd make time for you.'

'Huh, please don't poison us.' Danielle says in a joking tone. She grabs a biscuit and takes a bite. 'Not bad, actually.'

'Thank you for your approval, honey.' Audrey rolls her eyes and says to me, 'This one has a picky taste.'

Well, I know, right?

'Uh, excuse me for having a better sense of taste.' Danielle retorts.

'If by better, you mean expensive.' Audrey chuckles at her own remarks and Danielle's unbelieved expression.

'Sorry, dear,' Audrey turns to me, 'We aren't usually like this. She's never brought anyone to me to tease her with. It's truly a rare occasion.'

'Mum!' Danielle's face goes red. 'I thought we're here to talk business.' She crosses her arms like an angry kid.

'Alright, yes.' Audrey composes herself, 'So, what is it about colon cancer?'

'My mum has it and needs surgery to remove the tumour. She's in Singapore now, but I was wondering if you could supervise the surgery virtually.' I say, fiddling with my fingers, 'They asked me not to fly home for it, but I'm really worried.'

Audrey nods understandingly, 'I see. Do you have the details of her doctor and the hospital? I can make a call and see what I can do.'

'Yes.' I take out the paper of information on my mum's surgery which I asked my parents to send me.
