Danielle's POV:

After tying my hair into a ponytail, I go out for a run, trying not to let last Friday's incident get to me.

I wasn't mad, but surely I was a bit upset. So, I told Sage that she could never go out with Lexa alone again, which she complied quite happily.

To not act like a jealous and overprotective fiancée, I resisted the urge to follow Sage to the gallery this morning.

I know I'm a co-owner, but I'd rather not let Sage think I am obsessed with her or something.

However, I couldn't seem to stay still the whole day. My mind kept drifting to Sage's nervous face when she tried to tell me about it and her relieved look when I told her I wasn't angry.

What if I reacted badly? Would she choose to withhold things from me in the future?

I know how she dislikes conflicts, but I believe conflicts can be constructive and healthy, meaning that we still care.

The love fails when we can't be arsed to communicate, when we sweep things under the rug.

I hope it won't happen to us.

Although I'm not a fan of talking about my feelings, I've tried my best to be truthful and direct with Sage.

So, as long as she stays a terrible liar and has everything written on her face, I think we'll be alright.

As I run down our street, I take a right turn onto my usual path along the river.

After moving to Spain, I've grown a habit of running in the late afternoon because it's cooler and beautiful. I run on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday unless I feel lazy.

'Danielle.'

Someone calls me from behind. My body instantly stiffens at the sound of that distant voice.

That was the voice constantly in my head before I fell for Sage; the one that I never want to hear again yet can never forget.

I hear that person approach me, now standing right in front of me.

A ghost from the past.

Even with a change of hairstyle, the grey eyes are still as dead as I once knew.

'Long time, Danielle.' She smiles briefly, 'Nice to see you running. I thought you said it was lame.'

I can feel my heartbeat raise in anger. I ignore her words, spit annoyedly, 'What are you doing here, Alex?'

'Business in town.' She shrugs. 'How's life?' She asks as she cares.

'Life's been great. No thanks to you.' I roll my eyes, 'If you're only stopping me to chat, I am not interested.'

She lets out an irritating chuckle, 'Still so impatient.' Suddenly her tone drops, 'I heard you're engaged.'

'Yes.' I answer alertedly. 'None of your business.'

'You opened a gallery with her, like we once planned for us.' She seems not to hear me, continuing to say whatever she wants.

Making this about her, like bloody always.

'I'm done talking.' I don't want to be drawn into our nasty past, so I turn around, walking away from her.

'I can see why you like her. She's nice.'
