Yup. You read right. I don't know what this is gonna be😭
I'm giving you a cute one to make it up from Iroh's funeral (again, I'm really sorry abt that)
Zora stepped into her mentor's office with a smirk on her lips. Every officer who didn't know about the fact that Lin Beifong had basically adopted her when she was twelve thought she was crazy, walking in the chief's office without even knocking, and always coming out with that same smirk. They couldn't understand, and were jealous of her. How could a nineteen years old Firebender be a detective already, and a one Beifong liked?
Zora leaned against the door after closing it, grinning at how focused her adoptive mother was. "Hey chief," she said, making Lin jump. Her smirk faded when she saw how tired the metalbender looked, she hadn't gone home in almost three days. "Hey kid, do you have what I asked you?" The Firebender nodded and laid a file on Lin's desk. The chief thanked her with a small smile, and opened it without saying anything.
Zora sighed and sat on the other chair, taking her mother's hand in hers. "Lin, you need to go home," she said softly, glaring at the chief's untouched meal. "I can't, this case needs more attention," the older woman answered. She sighed and looked at the young detective, who was still smirking. Sometimes, Lin wondered if anyone had ever succeeded to take that off her face.
"Kya came by asking for you," Zora said, faking to be distracted. The Earthbender dropped her pen and fully focused on her daughter. "What? When?" she asked, fully focused on the Firebender, who grinned even more. "Yesterday night, when you were still working after I did everything I could to take you home. She was worried. Asked about you, said she'd try and come back later if you were there."
Lin sighed and went back to reading the file. Zora bit her lip. "Are you still not going to come home?" The chief's face softened when she saw her daughter's disappointed look and she sighed again. "I told you, Zor, this case needs more attention. If Kya stops by again, tell her I'm sorry."
"Mom, this isn't healthy!" Zora protested, before realizing how she had called the Earthbender, who now looked at her with widened eyes. They had considered each other as mother and child for years, but never talked about it, and it was the first time she had called Lin that.
"Sorry," she whispered, looking down. The chief sighed and shook her head, she didn't mind. "It's okay. Just don't forget about them, alright?" Zora immediately knew who she was talking about, and nodded. She knew Lin still felt guilty for not being able to save the Firebender's biological parents from the triads almost eight years ago, and it was part of the reason she decided to take care of Zora even though she didn't want kids. That was at first... she had grown to care about the young girl, who became her family. Lin had always refused one thing, though, and it was to replace her adoptive daughter's biological parents.
"I won't. But please, come home for once. You haven't slept in three days, you barely eat and feed yourself with nothing but coffee. And don't try to bring the case in, I'm working on it too, I know it's not that important. You're just trying to avoid having to face Kya," Zora said, hitting the sensible point. Lin sighed again and stood up, pacing in her office.
"It's not because you fought that she's still mad at you and won't talk to you. Fights are a normal thing in relationships." Lin scoffed sat on her desk, giving a gentle kick in her daughter's thigh. "And what would you know about relationships?" she asked with a playful grin. Zora's smirk appeared back on her lips and she chuckled. "I might have someone, who knows?"
"What!? Who!?" Lin asked, surprised. Zora laughed and laid her hands behind her head. "I'm nineteen, Chief, don't act so surprised." The Earthbender folded her arms, unsatisfied. "I said who, Zora?" Zora rolled her eyes and bit her lip, she knew she wasn't getting away so easily. "You don't want to know," she said half chuckling.
