In honor of Wattpad's @Romance chat on happy endings on Twitter tonight, I'm going to post what I shared on there.
If it's the first book of a series, the more unhappy the endings is, the more likely I am to read the sequel. I don't want everything to be resolved. But the last book had better give me that happy ending.
Depending on how bad your villain is, consider giving him a happy ending. It's unexpected and sometimes will bring a smile.
The villain needs character growth as well. Whether it's for better or for worse is up to the story.
If you don't give your heroes the happy ending, give it to your villain. He'll more than appreciate it.
Think of the most logical happy ending and throw it out the window. Give me something I didn't know I wanted.
Your thoughts?
Remember I'm open to questions and discussion.
