"Good morning Mr. Adams."
"Please, have a seat, Ms. Burke." Mr. Adams was not very social, so to have him call me into his office to talk this morning caught me off guard. If anyone goes to his office, it's usually only for a couple of minutes.
"Did I do something wrong?" He slightly grinned.
"Why would you think that, Ms. Burke?" I was afraid to say anything to my boss. He was a scary man and saying the wrong thing could get me in trouble. I could not afford to lose this job. It wasn't the best, but it paid the bills.
"It's just..."
"Spit it out."
"You usually don't invite people into your office." He took a seat behind his desk. Man, he was so intimidating just sitting there.
"You're correct on that." He fumbled through some papers, leaving me to sit in the chair with my anxiety getting higher and higher. "You're probably wondering why I needed to talk to you this morning." He continued fumbling through his papers, not once glancing up at me.
"Yes, sir."
"You know I have a daughter, right?" Still, he was fumbling through his papers.
Everyone knew Mr. Adams' daughter, Molly. She was a little hellion. His wife died during childbirth, leaving him to run a business and care for a child. Molly occasionally came to the office when the nanny brought her. No one ever spoke to her, though. As I said, she was a hellion. She wanted everything to be done her way and right when she wanted it, too. If she told anyone in the office to do something, they did it to keep her happy. Keeping her happy meant keeping Mr. Adams happy and no one wanted to see him unhappy if they could help it.
"Yes, sir." He looked up at me, folding his hands in his lap.
"I know today is your last day before your week vacation. Am I correct?"
"Yes, you are correct, sir."
"Well, I need a babysitter. My nanny will be out of town as her brother has passed and I have no one to watch Molly now."
"Would you like for me to find you a nanny, sir?"
"No, no. I found one already." He paused for a moment and gave me a weird look. "It's you, Ms. Burke."
"Excuse me, sir?"
"I want you to babysit Molly for me for the next week. You didn't have any plans during your week vacation, did you?" I didn't have any plans, but I still didn't want to watch his daughter. He is my boss, though. How could I say no?
"Okay, sir."
"Please, call me Mr. Adams."
"Okay."
"I will send you my address. You will be watching her there. She will be on her spring break week, so no school." I nodded. "She's thirteen. She shouldn't be any trouble." She was a teenager now. Of course, she would be trouble for me, but I just let it go.
"Of course, Mr. Adams."
"You may go. I will send you what time to be there each day. I will arrive home at different times throughout the week. I advise you to not make any plans after watching Molly." I nodded again. This was going to be one of the hardest weeks of my life.
