I must have fallen asleep because when I woke, Mr. Adams was in the kitchen with a drink in his hand. I wanted to see if he would talk to me about the situation between us. I was nervous to do it, but I couldn't return to work at the office with the tension between us. I walked to the kitchen to talk to him.

"Nice to see you awake, Ms. Burke."

"I apologize. I must have fallen asleep after Molly went upstairs while waiting for you." He took a sip of his drink. There was silence for a couple of minutes. I had no idea how to start the conversation. Thankfully, he spoke.

"Are you leaving now?"

"Is that what you want?" I waited for him to reply, but I received no response. He took another sip of his drink. I walked closer to him. "Do you want me to leave, Mr. Adams?"

"You're off the clock now. Don't you have any plans?"

"No, I don't have any plans."

"Well."

"I thought we could talk."

"What is it you want to talk about?"

"Mr. Adams, you know what it is I want to talk about."

"I'm not sure I do."

"I want to continue our conversation from earlier. Why can't you just talk to me about it? I don't want to return to work next week and have tension between us."

"I don't see what there is left to talk about. You went on the date and don't worry about any tension between the two of us because there won't be any. I can assure you there won't be." I believed what he said about there not going to be any tension. I think he genuinely thought we would both just forget about this and just return to work normally...that we would be like we've always been towards each other.

"Yes, I did. We've well-established that. However, I did say that I'd like to go out with you if that offer still stands. When you left this morning, I wasn't sure if you wanted to or not. You weren't very clear."

"Are you saying you like me now?"

"You and I have never talked. It's always been you giving me things to do at the office. We've never had much interaction until this week. I still have no idea what you're like outside of the office."

"So that's what this is? You just want to see how I am outside of the office...away from everyone?"

"You're putting words in my mouth. What I'm saying is, how am I supposed to like you if I don't know you? You're my boss and the whole time I've known you, that's all you've been. I would have to go out with you to know if I like you like that or not. If you don't want to go out anymore, then just tell me. I'm not going to take this yelling, though. I'll just leave."

"Does Molly know I asked you to dinner?" He spoke softer.

"She does. She's been pushing for us to talk. She wants us to go out."

"She does?" He looked puzzled.

"Yes. She's been asking me all day about it. She asked if we had talked, too." I didn't want to tell him everything Molly had told me.

"I'm sorry, Ms. Burke."

"For what?"

"For being so rude to you. You had told Ryan already that you'd go out with him. I am interested in you, but I never mix business with pleasure. I should have made my feelings clear to you before you even had a chance for someone else to ask you out. I apologize for all of this. I don't want to argue anymore."

"I don't, either."

"What do you say, do you want to have dinner together." I nodded, smiling. "How about tomorrow evening when I get in from work?"

"That works for me."

"Well, I guess I'll see you in the morning then?"

"You will. Goodnight, Mr. Adams."

"Call me John." I smiled.

"Call me Summer."
