The next morning, I got up and went downstairs. I could hear someone in the kitchen and I assumed it was Mr. Adams getting ready to leave for work.
"Good morning, Ms. Burke."
"Good morning, Mr. Adams." That was the nicest he has been to me in the mornings since I started watching his daughter for the week.
"I'll be home about 5pm today so you shouldn't have to stay late."
"Okay. If something changes, no worries. I don't mind to stay late." He nodded at me as he picked his briefcase off the counter.
"The swim instructor will be back today at 12."
"Thank you." I really didn't want to thank him because I was so embarrassed, but he was my boss.
"How was yesterday's session?" This is the most he had talked to me all week. I think this might have been the most he has talked to me since I started working as his assistant.
"It was good."
"No trouble?"
"No, sir." He looked at me and I knew what I had said wrong. "Sorry. No trouble, Mr. Adams."
"Well, I'm off." He didn't give me any instructions for Molly for the day and I was a little surprised. "Same as always for Molly. You seem like you've got this under control." He walked to the door and opened it, then looked back at me. I had walked a little closer to the doorway. "You and Molly seem to be getting along. She doesn't take too kindly to new people, so I'm surprised." I didn't know what to say.
"After the first couple days she came around." I wasn't sure what else to say. I didn't want to say the wrong thing. I heard footsteps and turned to see Molly coming down the stairs.
"Well, it's nice she's talking to someone. She and I never talk." Mr. Adams walked out, closing the door behind him.
"My father and you talking about me?"
"Oh, no. He just reminded me about the swim instructor coming at 12 and asked how yesterday's session went."
"I know he was talking about me by the look on your face when you noticed I was coming downstairs."
"Your father just said he noticed ypu and I were getting along."
"It's a little hard to believe he would notice something like that. He doesn't noticed anything that doesn't have something to do with business or money." I didn't respond. "Well, go ahead and fix breakfast. I'm going upstairs to shower and change, then I'll be down. If I were you, I'd shower after I ate and go ahead and put on your bathing suit. I'm putting mine on, too, when I get out of the shower so I can go on outside to the pool." I nodded.
"I will. I'll go ahead and start with breakfast." Molly started walking towards the stairs as I headed to the fridge.
"Ms. Burke?" I turned to her. "Instead of an omelet, would you fix some hashbrowns and bacon? Maybe scramble some eggs with it?"
"If that's what you'd like, of course."
"Thank you." Molly was still being nice to me. Maybe she had come around and actually liked me? I went ahead and fixed breakfast for the two us, pouring a glass of orange juice before Molly came to the kitchen. She dug into her plate. "I appreciate you making breakfast for me. I would do it but I'm not sure I'd know how." I looked up at her. "My father has always had someone do everything for me." I figured as much. That wasn't going to teach Molly anything though. She needed to learn some life skills and be able to do things on her own.
"If you want, I can show you in the morning how to make this all for breakfast. It's easy with the hashbrowns since they just need to be warmes up to get a little crispy. You won't have any trouble with them." Molly smiled.
"I'd like that." She took another bite. "Thank you for being nice to me."
"Why wouldn't I?"
"Usually the only time someone is nice to me is to get close to my father. Men try to be nice to get my father to do business with them or make some kind of deal. Women are only nice to me when they want to get in good with my father because he's rich."
"I'm sorry."
"I can tell you're not after my father. Its nice to be around someone who doesn't care about money like that for a change. Even the nanny my father hired is only watching me because of how well he pays. I heard her on the phone one day telling the other person on the line that she would quit if it weren't for the money."
"I'm sorry, Molly. That's not right."
"For once, I'd like for my father to date someone who is nice and doesn't care about how much money he has. That would be hard, though. It seems everyone knows my father and how wealthy he is." Molly took her plate and put it in the sink. I followed behind her and put the dishes in the dishwasher. "I'm going out to the pool. Come out when you're finished." I walked upstairs and grabbed my bathing suit. When I finished with my shower, I went out to the pool. Molly was in the pool. I got in slowly, allowing my body to adjust to the water. Time must have gone by fast because it didn't seem long before the swim instructor showed up. Ryan was shirtless again, leaving his muscles to speak for themself.
"Good afternoon, ladies." Ryan smiled at us.
"Good afternoon." I could feel Molly kick me in the water and I knew what she was trying to do. Ryan didn't notice as he walked over to get in the pool.
"Well, let's get started." Molly got out of the water and started laying in the chair again. Ryan had me do some different exercises and lay on my back in the water again before having me actually practice swimming. I finally moved a little in the water, but I was so embarrassed it was taking so long for me to get the hang of it. "No worries. You'll get it by the time I'm through with your sessions." Ryan started to leave and Molly whispered to me.
"You should ask him out." I shook my head no. "Um, Ryan?" He turned. "Do you have any plans this evening?"
"I do not, but aren't you a little young for me, Molly?"
"I'm not talking about myself. I'm talking about Ms. Burke." He looked at me and smiled.
"Dinner would be nice." I smiled at him, surprised he would want to go out with me. "What time do you get off?"
"Mr. Adams said he would be home at 5pm."
"I can pick you up from here if you want." I looked at Molly, not knowing if I should leave my car here and worried about what Mr. Adams might say when he saw that Ryan and I were going to dinner.
"You can leave your car here and go. No worries."
"I'll see you this evening then. I look forward to it." We smiled at each other and he left.
"I can't believe you did that." I said jokingly.
"Well, he's cute. I don't see what it would hurt. You look like you could use a night out anyway."
"He does seem like a nice guy."
"Well, I'm ready for lunch."
"What would you like and I'll go make it."
"I was actually thinking we could go out for lunch and then stop and get you something to wear on your date."
"Lunch sounds nice, but you don't have to buy me anything to wear. If you're okay with it, we can stop by my house on the way back here and I can pick up something to wear."
"Are you sure? My father's credit card has to be good for something."
"I'm sure, Molly, but thank you for offering."
"Well, let's go. I'm starving."
