We sat on the swing for a while longer. I felt so bad for Molly. I had never seen her so upset before. I didn't know what else I could say to her or anything that I could do for her, so I just let her lay her head on my shoulder and let her know I was there for her. She raised her head up.
"Thank you."
"You don't have to thank me, Molly. I didn't really do anything."
"You have been there for me. I know I wasn't very nice to you when you first started coming here and I'm sorry for that. You're a nice person and it feels good to have someone who will listen to me. I appreciate you being a friend to me." I put my hand on her shoulder.
"I'm glad I could be here for you." I changed the subject, hoping to cheer her up. "Now, what do you want to do today?"
"If we can watch a movie I'd be happy. I don't feel like doing anything."
"That's fine. If you want to watch a movie, that's what we'll do." We both got up and went inside. I gave her the remote and let her put on the movie she wanted to watch.
"Are you okay with The Blind Side?" I nodded.
"It's a great movie." We were about halfway through the movie and I started to get hungry. "How about we order a pizza?"
"That sounds good. I've got the number to a place that makes unbelievable pizzas. I'll call them. Are you okay with olives and mushrooms?"
"Yeah, I'm good with anything like that." I paused the movie while Molly ordered a thin and crispy crust pizza with black olives, pork sausage, and mushrooms. I loved vegetables like that on my pizza and I wasn't a fan of a very thick crust either so I wasn't upset by her ordering a thin and crispy crust. I played the movie and about 30 minutes later someone knocked at the door. I grabbed money from my purse and paid the man, shutting the door and taking the pizza to the living room. The TV was paused and Molly came back in the room, holding two 7ups in her hand. She sat them down on coasters on the coffee table.
"Thank you." We opened the box and dug in, playing the movie once more. It was nice spending this time with Molly inside, without any distractions. Once the movie was over, Molly took the pizza box and cans and threw them away.
"That was nice. I enjoyed that."
"Me, too."
"I think I'll go take a nap." I nodded. I was unsure what to do while she was napping. I went upstairs and changed into my bathing suit. I figured I could practice swimming, without any judgment. I went outside and got in the pool once my body had adjusted to the temperature of the water. I walked around for a minute, then laid on my back. The water felt so nice and it wasn't as hot out as it had been. I stayed in that position for a few minutes before standing up in the pool again. I was in the pool for a little while before Molly came out.
"I guess I should go change and join you."
"If you want." She turned and went back inside. When she came back out, she didn't think twice and jumped in.
"I don't know how you do that. My body needs to adjust to the cool temperature of the water first." She laughed a little at my comment. We stayed in the water for a while, then Molly spoke.
"Do you think you and my father will talk when he gets home?"
"I'm not sure. He may still be upset with me." She shook her head.
"I don't understand him." She let out a deep breath. "I didn't know my mother and my father never talks about her. Sometimes, I wish he would." She paused. "It would be nice to see my father happy."
"Do you think he is unhappy?"
"I don't even know how to tell how he feels, honestly. I know he isn't the nicest guy in the world, especially when it comes to working, but he is a good guy deep down. He deserves to be happy...he deserves to find someone." She paused again. "It would be nice to see you with him. He could use someone like you in his life." I didn't want to hurt her feelings, but I doubted that her father would even want to speak to me when he got home.
"Molly, I don't know if your father and I will ever go out, but I can assure you that I'll still be here for you if need someone to talk to or if you need anything. I'll give you my number so you can have it in case you ever need it."
"Thank you, Ms. Burke. I wish I could change my father's mind, though. I mean, you had already agreed to go on that date with Ryan Marshall, and backing out when he was about to pull up would have been a terrible thing to do. There's no reason that my father should be so upset with you." She paused and I could tell there was something else she wanted to say.
"What is it, Molly?"
"When we went to that business dinner with my father the other night, he made a comment about how nice you looked."
"He did?" She nodded.
"The look on his face made me think he felt something for you...even just a little."
"I can't believe he said something like that, though."
"I told you...my father is rude most of the time but he can be nice when he wants to be." She laughed a little and I smiled. I couldn't believe that Mr. Adams had said something like that, especially about me. Molly ended up going to her room and I waited downstairs in the living room for Mr. Adams to come home.
