I was nervous the next morning...like I was about to meet someone important for the very first time. I could not believe how I was feeling towards Mr. Adams...things were the same. Well, things were not necessarily the same since that kiss but I did not want things to be weird or uncomfortable between us. I thought about all of this while driving to his house to watch Molly. When I got there, I got out of my car and walked to open the front door as I had done all week.
"Summer?" I turned, startled. Mr. Adams was sitting on the porch swing. "I apologize for startling you."
"Oh, you're fine. I'm a little jumpy this morning." He smiled and I assumed he had a clue to what I meant. "I usually meet you in the kitchen in the mornings."
"Yes, you do."
"Why are you out here this morning?"
"There was something I wanted to do before I left." He got closer to me as he spoke. I could feel his breath against my neck.
"Oh. What would that be?" He placed one hand on my waist and the other on my cheek. He leaned in and kissed me. This kiss did not last as long as the one from the night before but it was just as passionate. I did not want it to end.
"I have to leave now but I'll see you tonight when I get home." We smiled at each other and I watched him go to his car and leave. Once inside, Molly was waiting for me in the kitchen.
"Molly? You're up earlier than usual." She nodded.
"You and my father went out last night..."
"Yes. You know that."
"Well...give me details."
"Wouldn't that be weird?
"Why would it be weird? We have confided in each other multiple times."
"I know, Molly, but me telling you how the date went with your father...would that not be weird to you?"
"No, it wouldn't. I want to know. Please tell me. I won't tell my father you told me. I promise."
"Well, things were pretty bad at the beginning."
"Really? Why? What happened?"
"We were talking about you...he got upset with me talking about you."
"What?"
"It wasn't anything bad. I promise, but I...I did tell him he should be home more and do things with you." I paused for a minute, not knowing how she was going to react. "I hope you're not upset with me, Molly."
"I didn't think you would say anything like that to him"
"I know. I didn't either, honestly. It's just...it kind of came out. I'm sorry. Please don't be upset with me."
"It's okay, Ms. Burke. I'm not upset with you. I am curious as to how he reacted, though. He hates when someone tells him what to do."
"Trust me, I've noticed. He was really upset with me...he raised his voice and I actually hid in the bathroom for a little bit before I went back out to the table to finish dinner." I paused. "Things ended up better, though. He apologized for reacting that way."
"He apologized? I can't believe he did that." Her eyes got bigger.
"He did. Believe me, I was surprised, too."
"Well, what happened at the end of the date? Did you two kiss?" I guess I blushed because Molly seemed to know the answer. "You did! I'm so happy about it. Did you initiate it or did my father?" I could not believe I was talking to a thirteen year old about this kind of stuff and how she was reacting to it shocked me a little.
"Your father did."
"Oh my...this is great news! How did he react this morning when he saw you? I noticed he was on the porch this morning which is out of the ordinary."
"We talked for a minute this morning...and he kissed me again."
"My father is never like this. It must be a good sign." Molly had tears in her eyes.
"What's wrong?"
"Oh, nothing's wrong." She wiped the tears from her eyes and sniffed. "It's just...I've never liked anyone my dad has dated before. I hope he doesn't mess this up. It would be nice having you around all the time."
