Molly did not speak to me the rest of the day, even when it was time for me to make her some lunch and dinner. I saw her glance around the corner at me in the kitchen to check if I had her food ready or not. For lunch, I made her a turkey sandwich and for dinner, I made pizza.
Molly stayed to herself the rest of the day and I could tell that what I asked her really bothered her, but I did not want to argue with her about it. I left it alone. After dinner, Molly went upstairs and shut her bedroom door. I waited in the living room for Mr. Adams to come home. When he did, he completely ignored me and walked into the kitchen, laying his things down on the table.
"Ms. Burke, how were things?" I did not want to tell him that his daughter was mad at me. I was sure she would tell him she hated me once I left.
"Everything went good, Mr. Adams." He flipped through some papers he had on his briefcase and then placed them back on it and looked up at me again.
"Would you care to join me outside?" I nodded. I had no idea why he wanted me to step outside with him, but I was not about to tell my boss no. We stood there in silence for a few minutes before he spoke. "Ms. Burke, how are things?"
"Excuse me, sir? I'm not sure I know what you mean? I said everything went well today with Molly."
"What did I tell you, Ms. Burke? Call me Mr. Adams, please." I nodded, realizing my mistake. "You did say everything went well today with Molly, but I am not asking you about that." I looked confused. "How are things with you...personally?" That was a rather personal question and one that I did not want to answer. I did not like to mix business with my personal life.
"Everything is great." He didn't speak for a moment and then grinned.
"There's no use in lying to me, Ms. Burke." He stepped closer to me, standing where I could feel his breath on my neck. He gently grazed my hand with his. "I already know."
"What do you mean?"
"I always check out those who work for me. If you want to make sure you have the right people hired in this business, then you have to do a little digging from time to time. I checked on you today." The sound of what he was saying made my knees weak. What could he possibly find out about me? Was there something bad? Should I be worried? I started to sweat a little.
"Mr. Adams, I don't understand." I gently wiped my forehead.
"You are struggling financially. Am I right?" I didn't want to admit it, but I nodded anyway. "Well, here." He reached into his suit pocket and handed me a check. "I went ahead and wrote the amount for this full week for watching Molly for me." I reached out my hand and took the check.
I looked down at the amount. $5,000
"Mr. Adams, this is too much. I can't accept this." He gently reached over and lifted my chin to where we were staring into each other's eyes.
"Take it, Ms. Burke. You need the money. Besides, $5,000 a week is what I pay the nanny." He dropped his hand to his side, taking it off my chin. "Goodnight, Ms. Burke. See you in the morning."
