For lunch, Molly told me to stop at a small shop. It wasn't what I was expecting.
"They have the best sandwiches." Molly went ahead of me and ordered a turkey club and a water. All of the sandwiches came with potato chips. I paused for a moment, trying to look at the menu and decide what I wanted. "Try the turkey club. It's my favorite." The waiter placed Molly's sandwich and chips that were in a nice, red tray on the counter and gave her drink to her. The sandwich did look pretty good.
"I'll have the same as her." After I got my food and drink, I joined Molly at the table she was seated at beside a window. We started eating.
"Are you excited for your date?"
"I don't know."
"What do you mean? He looks great. You two are sure to have a good time."
"I guess."
"Is something wrong?"
"No. Everything's fine."
"Clearly everything's not fine. You seem worried...uneasy...Are you nervous?"
"Kind of. I haven't been out with someone in years." I tried to think of the last guy I had went out with but couldn't. "I can't can't remember the last guy I went out with."
"If my dad will hire him to give me swimming lessons, he's a good guy. He wouldn't let anyone that wasn't over to the house. Trust me." Honestly, I did trust what Molly said. "Are you finished?" I nodded. "Well, let's go." We got in the car and I started driving to my house.
"You sure you're okay with me stopping by my house to get something to wear tonight?"
"Yeah, it's no problem. I'm excited to see where you live."
"Well, it's nothing like where you live."
"I didn't expect it to be." I didn't know whether that remark was meant to be rude or not, so I let it go.
"It's a small house. It has two bedrooms and one bath. I rent it." Molly didn't say anything. Soon, we arrived at my house. I parked in the driveway that was only large enough to fit one vehicle. I got out and unlocked the front door, Molly standing behind me looking around outside. We went in and Molly was taking it all in, looking at everything in my house. I walked through the living room where we were standing to my bedroom and opened the closet door. Molly came in and sat on the bed. I started moving all my clothes around, trying to figure out what to wear. I was always so nervous going out with someone and having to pick out something to wear just made me feel sick. What if I picked the wrong thing and looked bad on my date?
"Did you find something?" I knew Molly could clearly tell that I hadn't found anything to wear yet. She waited a couple minutes before speaking again. "Ms. Burke?" I turned to look at her. "Would you like some help?" I nodded. It was kind of sad that me, a grown woman, couldn't pick out something from my closet to wear on a date and I was letting a thirteen year old pick something out for me. Molly didbhave good taste, though, and it was nice that she was offering to help me. I was really struggling and glad that Molly was with me. "What about this?" At this point, I was sitting on the bed. Molly came over and laid a white top and a black skirt with white polka dots on the bed. "This doesn't look bad." Again, I couldn't tell if her remark was meant to be rude or not, like I didn't have anything worthy enough to wear on a date, so I didn't respond. "You have shoes to match?" I walked over to the closet and pulled out a pair of sparkly black sandals. They were new, something I had bought to be comfortable to wear to work during the Spring and Summer since it would be warmer weather. "I like those."
"I have earrings on." I touched the earrings in my ear. "I think that's everything."
"Let's go then." On the car ride back, it was quiet until we pulled in. "I'll do your makeup for tonight. We have some time beforehand, though, so I'm going to watch a movie in the living room. You want to join me?"
"Sure." I sat on the couch, waiting to see what movie Molly picked.
"Have you ever seen this one?" I shook my head yes. "Isn't it good?"
"Yes, it is." Molly had already turned on the DVD player at this point and put in the movie The Choice. It was kind of surprising to me that Molly chose a movie like this because it was kind of girly to most people. It was a Nicholas Sparks' movie after all, but it was such a good movie. I had seen it several times. After the movie, I followed Molly upstairs and let her do my makeup before changing into the outfit for my date. I slipped on my shoes.
"You look great. He's going to love it." I was still so nervous. "Don't be nervous." Molly placed a hand on my arm. "You'll be fine. Don't worry. Your car will be here when you get back." We heard a knock on the door and Molly smiled, rushing down the stairs to open the door. "Father?"
"Yes. Don't look so surprised to see me."
"Why did you knock?"
"I didn't know what you might be doing. I didn't want to disturb you. You could've been asleep for all I knew. Where's Ms. Burke?" About that time, I walked into the doorway, standing in front of Mr. Adams and Molly. "You look nice. Plans tonight?"
"Oh, yes. She has plans tonight." Molly smiled.
"That's nice." Mr. Adams walked into the kitchen and laid his briefcase on the counter. We followed him. "How was your swimming lesson today?" Molly could not contain her excitement any longer and had the biggest smile on her face. "What?"
"Actually father, Ms. Burke is going out to dinner tonight with Ryan Marshall."
"Your going out with the swimming instructor?" Mr. Adams looked kind of upset. I wasn't sure what to say.
"Yes, Mr. Adams."
"Molly, go upstairs." Molly didn't say anything and did as she was told. I was terrified.
"It's odd of you to do such a thing, isn't it?"
"What do you mean?"
"You don't usually go out with anyone, do you?"
"It's been a long time since I have. He asked me for dinner and I was hesitant."
"But you still said yes?" I nodded. "Don't go." I was shocked. Why would Mr. Adams tell me not to go on a date with Ryan? I still had no idea what to say.
"He's coming here to pick me up. He should be here shortly." Mr. Adams placed his hand on mine that was resting on the counter.
"Don't go."
