The next morning went the same as the days before. I only had two days left after today of coming to Mr. Adams' to watch Molly. The past few days had flown by. I had brought an extra outfit from home to wear to dinner with Mr. Adams. I wasn't sure what to wear, but I tried to find the nicest thing I owned because I was positive that wherever we went would be fancy and expensive. That's how he liked things.
"Good morning, Summer."
"Good morning, John." Molly was walking downstairs.
"I'll be home by 6pm. Are we still good for dinner?"
"Yes, we are. I'll be ready." He smiled and walked out the door. I could hear footsteps and turned tobface Molly.
"Does that mean you and Mt father are going out?"
"We are going to dinner, yes." Molly smiled.
"That's good news. I just knew he'd come around after getting so upset the other night."
"Well, I wasn't sure, but I am glad that he talked to me."
"I have to help you with an outfit. We definitely have to go out and get you a new one to wear." She paused for a minute. I could tell how excited she was. "You know...this is the first time that my father has went out with someone that I actually like." I was taken back a bit by her comment. Molly seemed to dislike most people. Everyone at the office tries their best to avoid her when she comes in. They have always seemed scared of her, something I noticed quickly after being hired as Mr. Adams' assistant. "Come on, let's go."
"But Molly, don't you want breakfast first?"
"I'm not that hungry."
"Are you sure? I can make something real quick."
"I'm sure. I'm good without anything. Come on, let's go! We've got to get you something nice...it's got to be perfect." Mollt started for the door and I followed behind, keys in hand. I touched her arm to get her attention.
"Molly?" She turned to me. "I'm glad you like the idea of me and your father going out. I wouldn't want to come between the two of you, ever, which is why I checked in with you the other night and let you know that he had asked me to dinner. However, I don't want you to get your hopes up about the two of us. I've never been around your father outside of work and business related matters, like the business dinner the other night. I'm not sure how it will go tonight."
"You want it to go well, don't you?"
"Well, yes. I do want it to go well. It would be pretty awkward going to work, though, if the date didn't go very well." I started thinking about what that would be like and it made me sick to my stomach. I was rethinking the whole thing.
"Please don't rethink going to dinner with my father tonight." I heard what Molly was saying, but didn't speak. I was still contemplating my decision. "If he got that upset because you were going out with another guy, then he must like you."
"You think?" She nodded.
"If my father wants to take someone out, he always just asks right away. He doesn't waste time. With you, though, he didn't do that. With you, it was almost like he was nervous to ask and then when he saw that someone else had beat him to asking, he got upset. He wasn't upset at you, but he was upset with himself. He was probably afraid that he had kissed his chance."
"You know something, Molly?"
"What?"
"You're pretty smart for your age."
"Well, living with my father you kind of have to be. Now, let's go."
"Okay, I'm coming." We walked out and got in my car. I drove until Molly instructed I pull over. I followed her inside and basically let her take over. She was very pushy when it came to selecting outfits and I wasn't about to get in her way.
"Try this." She stretched out her arm to me, handing me a dress. I went in the dressing room and changed. I looked in the mirror at a navy blue dress that was knee length. I turned to each side and I wasn't a fan of the dress at all. I walked out anyway to show Molly.
"What do you think?"
"I don't like it."
"I don't either. Here, try this one." She handed me another and without a second thought, I went back in the dressing room, this time feeling much better about how I looked in a forest green colored dress. It had two straps, which I preferred, and it was knee length. I walked out to show Molly and a smile came across her face.
"I love that on you. You have to get it." I looked in the mirror at it again and smiled. It was a perfect fit. "Go change and I'll grab you some shoes like thebones I let you borrow before. What size?"
"Eight." I went back in the dressing room and changed. I came out and Molly took the dress from my hands and paid for it and the shoes. I still wasn't comfortable letting her pay with Mr. Adams' credit card, but I couldn't argue with her.
"Let's go. I'm excited for tonight."
