AUTHOR'S POV
Mishti reached the backstage of her college auditorium, gasping for breath. She had run all the way from the main gate, her heart pounding not just from the sprint but from the strange encounter she had just had. Ishita, her best friend, noticed her instantly and rushed over, concern etched across her face.
"Are you okay?" Ishita asked, her voice laced with worry. Her eyes scanned Mishti's appearance, noticing the rose petals scattered across her clothes and the dust clinging to the fabric. "How did these roses get on your clothes? And why are your clothes so dusty? What happened? Tell me!" Ishita's words came out in a rush. "Or wait, let me call Mihir bhai—"
Mishti, still struggling to catch her breath from all the running, interrupted her in between gasps, "First of all! Give... me water..."
Hearing this, Ishita quickly grabbed a water bottle and handed it over. Mishti took the bottle and gulped down the cool water, feeling her heartbeat slowly return to normal. Once she was more composed, she looked at Ishita, who was still staring at her with raised eyebrows, silently demanding an explanation.
"Okay, okay..." Mishti sighed, knowing that her friend wouldn't let it go until she heard the whole story. She recounted everything—how she had been almost hit by a car, how the car's driver, a man with piercing eyes, had rushed over to check on her, how he had strangely held onto her hand for a little too long, and how she had scolded him in frustration before running off.
Ishita listened carefully, her face a mix of shock and amusement. "That man," she muttered, shaking her head, "Can't he drive properly? Must be one of those rich, spoilt brats." Her concern quickly returned as she asked, "But you're not hurt anywhere, Mishtu? You sure?"
Mishti nodded, reassuring her friend with a small smile. "I'm fine, Ishu. Just a little shaken, that's all."
Still not fully convinced, Ishita continued her questioning. "But you always come with Mihir bhai to college. What happened today?"
Mishti sighed again, pushing her hair back from her face. "Bhai had to go to Delhi for some office work, so I came by bus today." She paused for a moment, then added, "Anyway, let's not waste more time. We'll be late for the opening act if we don't hurry."
Ishita, now remembering the event they had been preparing for, nodded quickly. "Right, right! Let's get ready." She motioned towards the changing room and headed in that direction.
Mishti followed, still feeling a little off-balance from the encounter. But as she stepped into the changing room, her focus shifted to the task ahead. The opening act of the college event was important, and she couldn't afford to be distracted.
When Mishti emerged after changing into her costume, Ishita's eyes lit up with excitement. She clapped her hands together and grinned widely. "Someone's looking absolutely stunning!" she exclaimed, her voice filled with playful enthusiasm. "Every guy here is going to be completely awestruck by you. Finally, my bestie will get her man!"
Mishti laughed, shaking her head at Ishita's antics. Her heart, however, was still heavy with the memories of that intense moment on the road. Yet, as she stood there with her best friend, a smile crept onto her face, and for now, she tried to push those thoughts aside.
