"What's he doing here?" Jace grumbled as Simon and Clary approached the siblings.

"Hello to you. I'm joining the mission," Simon proclaimed.

"No, you aren't. You aren't invited," Serena said, already agitated because Simon's presence meant that this mission was about to go horribly wrong with his obliviousness to Downworld customs.

"I already told him that," Clary sighed.

"But then I pointed out that you can never have too much back up. And you've seen my fighting skills firsthand," the vampire said nonchalantly.

"There will be no fighting," Serena warned darkly. "If you hurt anyone inside the Queen's realm, she has every right to hurt you. This is a very sensitive political mission. And dealing with Seelies, the Queen specifically, takes a certain charm."

"Well, I'll have you know, I was voted vice president in eighth grade. And you do not win an election without charm, so..." he retorted, and Clary smiled but neither of the twins were amused.

"Simon this isn't middle school. This is life or death," Jace warned.

"Have you been to middle school?" Simon questioned and Clary chuckled, but Serena's face only darkened.

"This is not a joke. If you cannot take the gravity of this threat seriously then I will handcuff you to this bench and leave you here. Seelies have the beauty of angels and the viciousness of demons, and those opposing qualities make them unpredictable. They are easily the most dangerous creatures in the Downworld. And if you screw this up Simon, the Seelies will be the least of your problems," Serena threatened.

"She seems even more charming than normal," Simon commented and Serena glared at him, Jace placing his arm over her shoulders to calm her down and keep her in place.

"She takes her job and this threat very seriously, and you are treating it as if it's a trip to the mall. A vampire or a werewolf will attack you head-on, but Seelies, they wanna trick you into your own self-destruction," Jace explained.

"That's a little dramatic don't you think? I mean aren't Seelies like, woodland hippies who eat berries and dance?"

Jace had to hold Serena back from Simon with both hands.

"Serena, are you ok? Why are you acting like this?" Clary asked.

"Because as much as I like Simon, your little boyfriend is going to get us killed. He doesn't know the first thing about Seelies. Hell, he's been a vampire for almost a year, and he still doesn't even know the basics. This mission could get us all killed if we're not careful, and bringing an uninvited guest to the Seelie Court is not careful."

"You're not going to get him to change his mind," Clary commented.

"I could always snap his neck? Vampires can heal from that kind of thing but by the time he does, we'll be long gone," Serena drawled as she looked at Simon threateningly, her red lipstick bright in the dull cold air.

"Rena, we're wasting time here. Let him come, but just make it clear that we're not responsible for his actions," Jace said to his sister.

"You better do exactly as I say or we're going to have problems," she warned the Downworlder.

"Where's the entrance already?" Clary asked, annoyed by all this fighting with Simon.

And just like that Serena had a smile on her face as she and her brother moved to the other side of the bridge they were standing on.

"Cop out?" Jace asked as they took their positions, similar to that of starting a running race.

"I'm offended that you'd even ask," Serena scoffed before they ran, jumping clean over the railing and vanishing right before they hit the frigid water below.
