Celine had been sick.

Alec and Jace had looked up Celine's medical records and found that she'd had a history of mental health issues that could very well be hereditary, and while Serena didn't suffer any symptoms, Jace thought he was.

Clary had offered to summon Ithuriel to see if he could help, as they thought Jace was suffering side effects from him coming back to life.

And they couldn't ask for Serena's help summoning him because she would've needed to know why, even though she could literally just call out to Ithuriel and he'd have likely responded to her angelic voice.

If they couldn't find a fix for Jace, he'd have to go to the Silent Brothers, with the possibility of being deemed unfit to work and being deruned.

Izzy on the other hand was asking Serena's help for something mundane to wear on a date with a doctor.

Serena, who'd pulled out something from her own closet that was mundane enough for her sister to wear before rushing off to find Magnus.

She'd felt Ithuriel land on earth and it was as if his heavenly energy was calling to her, pulling her towards him.

The portal the warlock opened, however, wasn't gold, but silver, alive with angelic energy, a pathway from the angels.

And when she landed, she landed just in time process the scene and jump in front of Ithuriel.

To jump in front of him and allow the hand of the large, winged demon to rip out her heart rather than Ithuriel's.

Serena didn't even scream as blood poured from her mouth and she looked down at the massive hand sticking out of her chest, the remnants of her heart in its fist.

But Clary did.

And while Ithuriel's attention was on Serena, he didn't see as another demon snuck out from the woods and clawed out a piece of Clary's soul, before the demon growled and retreated, flying off into the night as Clary screamed for a second time.

The larger demon only roared as Ithuriel drew his sword only for it to pull its arm back and follow after the other demon, flying off into the night.

And then he turned to Serena.

Ithuriel caught her as she fell to the ground, and back at the Institute, fresh from her date, Isabelle screamed bloody murder as Alec caught her and her parabatai rune began to fade, Izzy with a hand on her heart as if she tried to hold it there.

Alec was in equally as much pain as he noted that his wedded union rune was long gone.

Both of them sobbed as they held each other, the pain and the absence of the runes confirming the worst.

Serena was dead.

She was gone.

Just like that.
