A/N

Hello readers! I would like to start by apologizing for the extended delay in updates. Life hit me pretty hard recently and college finals kicked my butt. Luckily this semester is over and I will have more time for updates. Thank you for hanging in there!

Much love,

DaleyMarie

I felt my body stiffen and a wave of jealousy surged through my body. I should have known Damien would still be legally married to Darla. I guess I just never thought about it, but it makes complete sense if she just disappeared one day without a trace.

I glanced over at Damien and I could tell his head was swimming with all of this information. I can't even imagine what he must be feeling. Not only was his "wife" back in town, she was trying to kill us. But most importantly, if she was close than his son must be close too, right?

"So what now? You know who did this and you know what car she drove. Shouldn't this be easy?" I asked.

Detective Greyson grimaced slightly, losing his composure for a split second before continuing. "You see, it's not as easy as you would think. Darla doesn't exist after the day she disappeared. There are no traces of her whatsoever. We think she may have powerful connections that got her a whole new identity. In reality, we don't know who she is."

"Fine, but like I asked, what now? What are we going to do about this?" I asked. I could feel my face flush as my frustration built. I can't live knowing there is someone out there trying to hurt us.

I felt Damien's arms tighten around me, his lips kissing my cheek. "It's okay, princess. We'll figure it out. All you need to worry about right now is resting. Detective, if you don't mind. "

"Of course. Before I go, I would highly recommend you two stay in a safe house until this is over. Here is my card" he said, placing his card on the side table attached to my bed, "call me at any time". He nodded once before exiting the room.

I couldn't stop the millions of questions that still ran through my head. I had too many questions and not enough answers.

"Stop it, princess. You need to rest" Damien said, sensing my thoughts.

"How can I rest knowing we aren't safe?"

"Hey," Damien said as he lifted my chin, forcing me to look into his eyes. "I will never let anyone hurt you ever again. I will keep you safe, I promise. Understood?"

I nodded my head. His words eased my anxiety slightly. I don't think it would ever go away until she was behind bars, however.

I closed my eyes, suddenly feeling very tired. All the stress from my surgery and the new details of our crash hit me all at once and there was no point in trying to resist, especially as I lay there in Damien's arms. My mind started to drift and just as I felt sleep about to pull me all the way under, the door to my room burst open.

"Jess I saw the news and I've been calling and calling and finally I just decided to show up and-"

I opened my eyes and saw Kat by the door. Her eyes were wide and her mouth hung open in shock as she saw Damien and I laying next to each other. A look of hurt flashed through her eyes but it was quickly replaced by pure annoyance.

"So you're the reason why it was so hard to get any information on my best friend?"

Damien shrugged slightly, "As you can already tell, this crash is getting lots of media attention. I can't have just anyone calling and being able to get information on her so the hospital and I added extra security."

"Extra security?!" Kat threw down a tray onto the counter that I didn't notice she was holding until now. "I just had to buy myself a pair of scrubs and pretend that I was bringing her food from the cafeteria just to get in here! You're not the only one who cares about her you know!"

Damien looked over at me with one eyebrow raised in question. I gave him a small smile in return. "Would you mind giving us a moment?" I asked.

"I need to make a few phone calls anyway" Damien said before slowly lifting himself out of bed and exiting the room.

I looked over at Kat and patted the spot beside me on the bed. I started to feel guilty as Kat walked over. Her head hung low and she stared at the floor, refusing to make eye contact with me. It had been a crazy couple of days and I still hadn't talked to Kat about her confession. I wasn't there for her yet here she was for me when she heard about my accident.

Kat sat down and we sat in silence for a few moments. I didn't really know what to say and I guess she didn't either.

"I'm sorry" we both blurted out at the same time, making us laugh. I didn't know how much laughing would hurt, however, and I couldn't mask the grimace of pain as I clutched at my chest.

"Oh, fuck. Do I need to grab a nurse?!"

"No, no I'm fine, I promise" I choked out. "What are you even sorry for? I should be the one who's sorry."

"For... you know... saying what I said. I might have been drunk but I still remember."

"Kat, you do not need to be sorry." I tried to lift myself slightly so that we were at eye level but the pain forced me right back down. Kat reached over to grab the remote, pressing the button that raised my bed.

"You're hopeless" Kat said, shaking her head.

"Shut up. Now, like I was saying. You don't need to be sorry. You were honest with me which is what best friends do. I'm a shitty friend because I wasn't honest with you."

"You're not a shitty friend, I-"

"Stop." I said, holding my hand up. "I was a shitty friend. Things between Damien and I have been going on for a while now and I should have told you."

"I understand why you didn't. I'm the weirdo who's still in love with her best friend. I wouldn't want me either..."

"Don't make me crawl out of this bed and beat your ass! Literally any women out here would be lucky to have you and I will fight anyone who says otherwise. Just because the stars didn't align for us doesn't mean yours won't align for anyone else."

Kat smiled at me as tears came to her eyes. "I'm glad you're okay and I'm glad you found someone like Damien. You deserve the whole world." Kat leaned over, kissing me on the cheek.

Damien walked in the door and paused as he noticed us. "Um, I brought you a coffee." He said, handing Kat a cup.

Kat took the cup, punching his arm in the process. "Thanks, fucker. You hurt her, I hurt you!" Kat said, standing up and walking out of the room.

Damien looked over at me, amusement in his eyes. "Should I be concerned?"

"She got through your security, hun. You should be very concerned."

Damien laughed, crawling back into the bed beside me. Finally, I was able to fall asleep.
