Checking Out

Luigi began to worry. It was almost 3 in the morning and Daisy hadn't returned yet. He paced in front of the door in anticipation, he couldn't sleep.

After another half an hour, Luigi heard the door open. He ran to the door and saw Daisy coming inside.

"Daisy!" Luigi exclaimed, "What happened?"

"Mr.L happened." Daisy harumphed.

Luigi paled.

"Oh my gosh, what did he do to you?!" Luigi demanded, looking her over.

"I'm fine!" Daisy replied.

Luigi let out a sigh.

"I broke his nose, but before he ran off, he said that he wants 'the book'. What book is he talking about?" Daisy asked.

Luigi looked down at the floor.

"He couldn't mean THAT book, could he?" Luigi muttered.

"What book?" Daisy asked again.

Luigi looked up at her.

"I-I think that he wants... the Dark Prognosticus," Luigi stated.

"The Dark Prognosticus?! Why would he want THAT?!" Daisy questioned.

"I-I don't know! But he wants it. And nothing good can come from it..." Luigi murmured.

Luigi sighed. He needed all the help he could get on this. Mario had hidden away the Dark Prognosticus after the 'Ultimate Show', but if Mr.L didn't get it Luigi feared that Daisy could get hurt... Even though 'hurt' seemed like an understatement at this point.

"Weegee? Weegee, are you alright?" Daisy asked.

Luigi shook his head.

"Yeah, I'm fine," Luigi said, "I gotta go do something."

Luigi ran off before Daisy could object.

"For the last time! Why do you keep coming to ME for help? Last I checked, you said I wasn't to be trusted!" Dimentio spat.

"I know I said that! But you're the only one who actually knew Mr.L!" Luigi replied, "So I would think YOU should be the first person I go to!"

"He's YOUR alter-ego!" Dimentio retorted.

"Not anymore, remember?!" Luigi exclaimed.

Luigi let out a sigh.

"Look, I know that I shouldn't be asking you to help, especially since I did so several times already..." Luigi said, "But I learned the hard way that ending Mr.L's game was the wrong approach. I made that mistake and now he's mad at me... So I want to try and get to him so I could talk it out, or something..."

Luigi looked down at his feet as Dimentio just stood there trying to process this.

"Luigi..." Dimentio started.

"Yes?" Luigi questioned.

"I..." Dimentio paused, "I think that I may be able to help..."

"You do?" Luigi asked.

"Yes. Simply place a trap. If Mr.L is after the Dark Prognosticus, use it as leverage against him. Hide it in plain sight and connect it to a trap that would be sprung once it is taken." Dimentio told him.

"That's perfect!" Luigi exclaimed, "But... why does he want the Dark Prognosticus?"

Dimentio shrugged.

"It is too early in the game to tell," Dimentio stated.

Luigi sighed as he started for the door.

"Everything is not just a game Dimentio." Luigi retorted.

Luigi slammed the door shut behind him.

"You're right. It's a dangerous game." Dimentio muttered, "A very dangerous game..."

----------------

Luigi rushed over to Mario's place and knocked on the door. Mario answered shortly after.

"Weegee? What's going on?" Mario asked, rubbing sleep from his eyes.

"I know how to get Mr.L!" Luigi exclaimed.

All the sleep left Mario at those words.

"Really? How?" Mario asked.

"I'll explain on the way. But first, where did you hide the Dark Prognosticus?" Luigi asked.

"It's in Peach's Castle, in the vault... Why?" Mario asked.

"I'll tell you on the way!" Luigi exclaimed while tugging Mario by the arm.

----------------

On the way to Peach's Castle, Luigi told Mario about how Mr.L attacked Daisy and how he wanted the Dark Prognosticus for some reason. He told Mario everything except who gave him the idea for the trap.

"You think that we can just straight up trap this psychopath?" Mario asked.

"Yup!" Luigi replied.

Mario went up and knocked on the big castle doors. His knock was answered a few moments later by a Toad guard in armor.

"Oh! The Mario brothers! What brings you two here?" The Toad asked.

"We're here to talk with Peach," Mario replied.

"Of course, please come with me!" The Toad replied.

The Mario brothers followed the Toad down the hallways until they could see Peach standing down a hall.

"Princess! You have visitors!" The Toad called.

Peach turned towards them.

"Mario! Luigi! I'm so happy to see you!" Peach exclaimed.

Peach rushed up to Mario and gave him a hug, causing his face to turn red.

"Are you here because of-?"

"Yes," Mario stated, cutting off her sentence.

"I was afraid so... Come on. You can tell me everything in here so no one else can hear." Peach said.

She pulled them aside into a room and then locked the door.

"Okay. What news about Mr.L do you have?" Peach asked, "I've been trying to reassure everyone, saying that Mr.L is gone and that this is a fake, but I can't keep lying to them! I'm going to have to come clean soon!"

"Then we have to make sure this works!" Luigi exclaimed, "We need to know where you keep the Dark Prognosticus."

Peach's breath hitched at the mention of that book.

"Why do you need that..?" Peach murmured.

"So we can set a trap for Mr.L." Luigi stated.

"Okay... I'm listening..." Peach replied warily.

"We put the book out in the open, but we connect it to a trap. We have people camp out there, out of sight, so they can get Mr.L the second he appears!" Luigi exclaimed.

"That sounds like a great plan! But... Who's going to camp out for Mr.L?" Peach asked, "He would easily overpower any Toads I set to guard the book."

Luigi stepped up.

"I'll do it," Luigi stated.
