THIRTY FIVETHE GOLD COIN in Kaeya's hand glinted as he flipped it in hand repeatedly. He stood by the grand window of his dormitory residency, his gaze cast over the view of the city. He could see the Dawn Winery's vine walls from where he stood, and at that moment he couldn't help but wonder how smoothly the night was passing for his brother and his unexpected guest.
A sudden knock at the door drew his attention, and he begrudgingly tucked away the coin in hand to answer.
"(Y/n)?" Her name left his lips. "What are you doing here so late? Did the party end early?"
The young woman marched past him and into the dimly lit room. Partly confused, Kaeya gently shut the door, then turning to look at her as she simultaneously spun around to face him.
"You were never planning on going..." (Y/n) said. She seemed rather distraught. "Why'd you lie to me? In fact, why'd you ask me to go with your brother in the first place? I thought you were doing something nice for him but, I'm not so sure anymore."
Kaeya crossed his arms over the other. "For starters, you're right. I couldn't give a damn if Diluc was pestered by the bachelorettes of this city." He noticed the disbelief on her face. "Secondly, it was never my intention to lie to you. And for that, I apologize."
(Y/n) stood there, as if expecting him to say more than what he just did.
"...To put it simply," He averted his gaze. "There is a history between my brother and I. A distasteful one." "But this has nothing to do with him," He said. "Though you could say I was using him to get to the truth."
"...The truth?" She repeated.
Kaeya walked around her to get to his nightstand. He stared down at it before his gaze flickered towards her face. "(Y/n), you're as charming as they get," He began. "But tell me why the daughter of an esteemed family would run away to collect dust managing an old archive?"
The young woman lowered her chin, a few strands of hair falling over her sheets. "I know you're not a bad person Kaeya," She said. "You could've easily asked me instead of all the games."
Kaeya's shoulder shook as he lightly laughed. "Oh, I already knew. But then what would be the fun in that?" He retorted playfully. "I just needed to confirm my suspicions."
(Y/n) became a bit timid. "...You really want to know?" She raised a brow.
Kaeya crossed his arms over the other. "We've gotten this far. Why stop now?"
She then took a step forward closer to him, her gaze meeting his. "Alright then. Yes. I am the daughter of a wealthy and influential name from Fontaine. I ran away from my engagement night under the agreement to experience a life outside the one I live per my would-be fiancé's request. And now I'm here after a failed abduction out of my home in Liyue."
The cavalry captain stared wide eyed at her as he processed what she had just said.
(Y/n) then sat on the edge of his bed. Lifting her gaze towards his face, she spoke. "You know my secret. Tell me yours."
Kaeya chuckled. He really couldn't help but enjoy every minute he spoke with her. He took pleasure in the hesitation in people's eyes when he'd place them in stressful situations. But (Y/n), she was just downright charming in her own way. The two butted heads with their own strategy.
