"So Analise, how have things been lately?" "Things have been... odd." "How so?" "I don't know," I shrug and run my fingers over the sheer curtains hanging along the tall bay window,
"it just seems like I'm watching my movements. Like I'm not in my own body. Just a spectator of my life."
"And how do you feel about that?" It terrifies me. "Alright, I guess," I shrug again, trying to appear overall indifferent. "Analise, please take a seat on the chaise," Dr. Holland motions with her pen to the cream-colored lounge.
I form a bubble in my mouth, then plop down onto the piece of furniture. "It seems you're very indifferent about everything, am I correct?"
"Sure." "So, let's not talk about the incident. Let's talk about your personal life. We haven't delved very far into that, have we? So, what are your interests?"
"I like bands. Punk, alternative, death metal, etcetera. Ummm... I'm a christian; Go Jesus!" I awkwardly fist-bump the air, then continue when she doesn't respond,
"I'm seventeen, I love to read, I love chemistry, I hate needles, my best friend was killed almost a year ago, and I have a boyfriend."
"What bands specifically?" She scrawls something out on her clipboard, then engages in more unsettling eye contact. "Uh... Of Kings and Orderlies, Fortune of the Raw... Jacobson Rostov-stuff like that."
"Mhhm..." More writing ensues, then she stares back at me, "Have you been to church lately?" "Yes, we attended the Christmas Eve Service at Rising Sun Baptist." More scribbling. "What books do you like?" "Mainly John Green, J.K. Rowling, L.J. Smith." Words written... "What's the chemical compound for glucose?"
"Carbon six Hydrogen twelve and Oxygen six." "Very nice," She smiles at me, then writes. "Why do you dislike needles?"
"The pain, mainly. They're very menacing." Scribble scribble. "Tell me about this friend that passed away. Were you close?" I flashback to seeing Elliot for the last time: "Go on," He hisses, "get." "Analise dear? Is this too hard for you to speak about?"
My eyes fly open and I realize that I must have shut them during the flashback, "Uh, no, it's fine. His name is Elliot- was Elliot. We were really close."
"And how did he die?" "My ex-boyfriend shot him." "I'm terribly sorry, dear." "It's alright." "Your mother sent you here for that reason?" "Yes, she thought it would be good to be around Cindy's boys."
"Speaking of Cindy's boys, tell me of this boyfriend you have." She didn't write anything while I was talking about Elliot. How odd... "His name is Liam; he's the third oldest." "Why didn't you choose to date any of the others?"
"I don't know. I guess he just had more of an allure." I shrug and she writes. "What are you writing?" I blurt. She glances up at me, seemingly unsurprised by my outburst, "Just information about you, dear."
I nod, then settle back onto the chaise. It's silent for a moment, and just as she finishes writing, the timer dings! signifying that our session is complete. "Very good work today, Analise. Perhaps we'll do more talking Wednesday, yes?" She grins at me and I half-smile back.
No way. I hurriedly exit the pea green room and out into the hallway. I saunter down the dimly lit passageway until I reach the waiting room, where I spot my gorgeous boyfriend lounging lackadaisically against the far wall.
