As expected, her number's a no-go. I kept texting and calling. For the first few times, it just rang. Eventually, all I could hear was the automated response, saying that the subscriber couldn't be reached. What the fuck?!

"I sure hope you're trying to contact applicants," Ms. Park says after clearing her throat.

"Uh, yes, but she isn't answering my calls." Ah, the beauty of working in recruitment.

Jihyo shakes her head. "Then look for another applicant. It's that simple, Momo-ssi." Ugh, this bitch. Always on my back. Am I the only HR employee? Why is she always on my case?

Once she steps out, I go back to voraciously texting the number Dahyun gave me. We aren't even a couple, yet here I am—acting like a clingy girlfriend.

You're not like this, Momo. Get a grip. I sit back and think of possible scenarios. Did she ghost me? Did I get the number wrong? No, that couldn't be. I memorized it like a daily prayer, uttering it even after I woke up. Is this another one of her pranks? How dare she?

"There she is again, in her own little world," a guy from the IT department tells his buddy as they pass by our area. I glare at him, and he just smiles at me. Plastic.

As I much as I hate being a broken record, my thoughts can't help but circle back to this damn question: "Is Kim Dahyun even real?!"

"Momo-ring," Sana calls out as she turns her chair towards me. "Mi-tang and I are going bowling tonight. How about a girls' night out, for old times' sake?"

"No," I say, my thoughts still preoccupied with this enigma.

Sana's about to say something, but just pouts, defeatedly turning back to her desk.

How long has it been since the three of us bonded beyond work? I feel guilty, thinking that they're my only friends in this cesspool of a company. It's just that I've been so preoccupied with dreaming and this Dahyun...no one will understand me.

But, maybe, I need a distraction, after all.

"Sa-tang," I utter. "I'm sorry. What I meant to say was, can we go to the skating rink instead of bowling?"

Sana's face immediately lights up. "I'm sure Mi-tang would like that as well."

"You ready?" Sana asks, as she readies her purse.

"Yeah, I'm just closing some stuff," I reply. We always try to leave at exactly 6 p.m. just so we're able to make the most out of the night, especially on weekdays.

"Momo-ssi." Oh God. What now, Jihyo?! She heads over to my desk and places a pile of resumés on top. "Please contact these applicants tomorrow, okay? Some of the departments are already complaining about the 'speed' of staffing," she adds, her cold hand on my shoulder.

"I'll meet you at the lobby, this won't take long," I tell Sana, as I sort through the CVs.

Wow, this is a lot. Looks like I'll be slaving away at the phone tomorrow. Ms. Park really knows how to give me a good time, as always.

Nearing the end of the pile, my fingers freeze at one resumé. I immediately pull it out of the stack to examine it further. No way.

It's her—Kim Dahyun.
